Bookmarks: find containing folder

Post by newmarket2 »

I think I used to be able to open SHOW ALL BOOKMARKS, search on a word/phrase and then, for an item found, see it's parent folder.
Can't anymore.

Was it an extension that I somehow lost or did core Firefox change?

It was probably this extension called "Show Parent Folder" but that has been withdrawn by the author and is no longer available.

Stepping back a bit, being able to determine the parent folder of a bookmark is part of a larger problem.
Basically, as a result of a number of events and stupidity on my part, my bookmarks are a mess and I want to sort them out.
Finding the parent folder was the way I used to do this, but I'm looking for other methods.

One thought...
At one point, I think I saw a file that was a dump/export of my bookmarks and it was a text listing (with indenting to show parent/child relationships)
It might have been an HTML file, but I"m not sure.
If it does exist, then I'm thinking I can manipulate it in a text editor and then import the updated file back into FF

first step is: find the file and confirm that I could copy it and then manipulate it...
??? yes ???

You can export Firefox bookmarks to HTML format using menu path Bookmarks->Show all bookmarks->Import and Backup->Export Bookmarks to HTML.

You can manipulate it but because it's in HTML, be very careful what you delete or move as the structure is critical to the ability to import the modified file.

Can you say more about the key structural elements that are critical? I'm sure I could figure it out by trial and error, but why not start knowing what to watch out for.

several hundred, but somehow in moving back/forth between desktop/laptop many were duplicated, so I might have 1/2 dozen of the same one...all in different places.

The old Parent Folder (in English) is still working for me.

A few hundred is nothing! You could set up a bunch of empty topic folders in Show All Bookmarks, then drag 'n' drop the bookmarks in, renaming and making some subfolders as necessary. No need to learn HTML. And by viewing them all in one window, you can see the duplicates.

I agree with LoveMyFoxy ... that many bookmarks is minimal... and frankly, in the time you have spent here you could have had it all done... there is this ...
Bookmark Deduplicator :: Add-ons for Firefox

...but I would do a profile backup any time you mess with it..

I like "deduplicator." I hereby coin the verb "dedupe."

I had an extension that looks for dead bookmark links, but it didn't update and expired. I see there are 1401 bookmark extensions. Do you happen to know an extension that I could use?

Is it this simple? Do I need to just import, make changes and import bookmarks?
