Search Suggestions

Post by wisgro »

I unchecked search suggestions as suggested in FAQ help, restarted ff but search suggestions won't turn off. Annoying. Is there a second, secret method to turn off the suggestions. I use ff 52+ and winxp pro. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

What search suggestions do you mean?

Are this suggestions that show in the location bar drop-down list or are this suggestions that you see in a search bar drop-down list?

If the latter is the case then which search bar (Navigation Toolbar or on a web page)?

@wisgro :

You say : " unchecked search suggestions as suggested in FAQ help " , which makes me think that you're talking about the search suggestions in the address bar (aka : location bar, URL bar, Awesome bar).

You can turn those off :

Type in the address bar : 'about:config' (without the quoation marks) and press Enter.
(promise to be careful, if asked)
Type and search for the preference :
'browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled' (without the quotation marks)
and set its value to 'false'.

good you asked again. firefox search bar dont show suggestions, but the google site itself do whatever some set as option. we tried out last days with edge and chromium, no way. and it is not "instant ..." in settings for google which are stored as cookie. its complete different.

Thanks Happy 112. Your suggestion worked. No more annoying list of suggestions as I type in the address window.

It may be a secondary setting faded or missing from the OP's Search page GUI.
On the Search page/tab there is a Provide search suggestions and a secondary Show search suggestions in location bar
It wasn't determined where the suggestions were showing up, was it?

Well, Grumpy, as changing that particular pref solved the OPs problem, I think it's safe to say the it was the location bar, aka address bar, aka URL bar, aka Awesome bar (I fail to see what's 'awesome' about it, though)

@Happy112 - Seem to remember there was a separation between the control for search input located on the Nav Tool bar and the nav (loc) bar's url input.
Two separate settings. I'm just wondering if there is an extension installed which is having an affect?
Fixed is not always the case??

Grumpy, I haven't a clue what you're talking about (maybe because it's been too darn hot over here for the past three weeks now).
But hey : the OP is happy, which makes me happy (pun intended .....)
