Unresponsive Script Error in YouTube.

Post by Hippie459MN »

Out of no where yesterday I started getting this error when visiting YouTube.

Code: Select all

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: https://www.youtube.com/yts/js…r-vflEnowvN/desktop_polymer.js:204
I was on 55.03 when it started and I noticed it only happens when the sidebar in YouTube loads or is expanded. I have tried running Firefox in SafeMode and still got the error, I have tried updating to 56.02 and still the same problem, even in SafeMode. I have also tried setting the JS timer from 10 to 20 in the about:config and still no luck.

Any help would be great. I dont know if its something with FF, my computer itself, or YouTube. It doesnt do it on my other computer that I upgraded to FF 58.0 (which I hate due to the fact that it breaks a few must have add ons), and it doenst do it in Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer so im guessing its a FF and/or YouTube issue but once I hit stop script, 3/4 of the web site is unuseable. I can watch videos just fine so long as I dont expand the side bar on the left side of the page. If I do, it will throw that error. Also, if I hit continue, it will just keep throwing that error over and over.

YouTube is the only web site this is happening on and if I cant get it resolved, I will be forced to leave FF behind.

Thank you.

I too started getting the same JS error yesterday that said the same thing.

I used the inspection tool included in Firefox and found this.

It looks to be a problem with the new YouTube page layout, and the scripts are made by the Google Polymer Project.

I suppose I will also go to using Chrome because this error has actually locked up my computer.

Glad to see im not the only one. I was starting to think it was only me as I couldnt find anything anywhere on the net about this. Im guessing it is something to do with the way FF is (not) handling JS cause like I said, I dont get this problem in Chrome or IE. Only in FireFox.

it happened a few times in firefox 56 but just a few times so it is not making that trouble for me, however in seamonkey this script makes youtube experience very very bad. It pops up constantly. I tried blocking that script with adblock but then youtube page becomes empty. Then I tried changing dom.max_script_run_time to 20 according to this page https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/wa ... ive-script but it still pops up and freezes youtube very regularly. So i would also like to see a solution

I second this fine gentleman or lady, same glitch with the https://www.youtube.com/yts/jsbin/deskt ... polymer.js in the last couple days. If you debug script and then prettify it in the Firefox Developer Tools, it breaks into script at 3867 line, most of the time:

_effectEffects: function (property, value, effects, old, fromAbove) {
for (var i = 0, l = effects.length, fx; i < l && (fx = effects); i++) fx.fn.call(this, property, this[property], fx.effect, old, fromAbove)
},

in a function Polymer.Bind._modelApi._effectEffects. Well, this function is always on a stack and script stops on it or on some calls higher on a stack from it. And if you stop script and resume it, youtube starts functioning smoothly (not every time, but often), until you reload a page or click a video and go to it.

I suppose Google again trying to improve something that doesn’t need to be improved because it works just fine? And no option to go back to working version.

BTW, I still use FF 47.0.2 (I hate hasty updates).

Anyway, Youtuve became unusable now.

Oh, and I’ve noticed that for a quite some time something strange was happening to the video duration stamp on a video thumbnail: page loads without them and then populate thumbnails some time later. Like, several months ago thumbnail and its time loaded simultaneously and pretty fast. Maybe it is somehow relevant to ours current problem? Google doing something with a way to add timestamp duration to thumbnails?

Are you using Youtube's "dark" mode?
Turn it off & see if your issue persists.

Suffering from the issue. Althought I'll ad my two cents. It does happen even if youtube's dark mode is turned off.
And sometimes (maybe 1/10 times) it's a ublock origin script that is causing the freeze.

no issue here with uBo. post your settings and lists please.

Firefox 56 -> uBo 1.13.8 is recommended.

Sure thing, here's my Ubo config ( https://pastebin.com/XUeB3Qdt ), I doubt it's related to the desktop_polymer.js script error but who knows.
Also I'm using Firefox 57.0 (x64) with uBlock Origin 1.14.18.

i dont think is uBlock - running smooth, no messages on youtube. (also dark mode).
also tested in firefox 56 with uBo only and your settings - nothing

is it possible that an installed antivirus is intermitting?
cookies blocked for youtube?

I do use uBo but I know its not uBo here either. I completely disabled all plug ins and it still happens. Even on a fresh FF install with no plug ins. Its when the side bar loads or is displayed that the problem happens. I can watch videos just fine and have no issues but if I try to expand the side bar it will freeze up FF and about 10 seconds later throw the error. The home page that loads/displays the side bar right from the beginning will throw the error right away and there is no way around it. I dont know why FireFox seems to be the only browser with this problem and why its not happening to everyone. Make me think its something with my computer maybe. I dont know. I have moved over to chrome for now as it doesnt have any issues.

I personally dont run any anti virus software on my computer so I know its not that and I know for a fact that I do not have any virus or anything on my computer. Thinking of doing a second installation of FF 58 to see if that one has any issues. Sadly 58.x breaks just about every plug in I use so I refuse to update to it.
