My bookmarks backup file created automatically from time to time by FF57 is 251KB in size and has a .jsonLZ4 file suffix. If I manually create a bookmarks backup file using the Import and Restore function, the file is 621KB in size and has a .json file suffix.

I am assuming that the identical bookmarks are backed up with each method.

Why the different file types and sizes?

jsonLZ4 is auto-backup (for security reason compressed)
json is manually
html is manually

OK, thanks, guys. If I ever want to restore from a backup, which should I use?

jsonlz4 is used, when places.sqlite is not present.
recover IMO possible with firefox itself -> library
loading possible with json/html, overwrite dont know, IMO add only -> search for duplicates

Hi,
You can use either.
For ref; > http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_an ... _-_Firefox
NB: "When you import a bookmarks HTML file, its contents are added to your existing bookmarks."
If you do this, then a little "house-keeping" will be required.

Brummelchen, sorry I don't understand your reply.

If I want to replace all of my existing bookmarks with the bookmarks in a backup file, I would normally go to the Import and Backup button (via the Library in Firefox). If I press Restore, it gives me the choice of restoring from any of the backups in the Bookmarks Backup file folder in my Profile - including both the compressed or the uncompressed versions. I am just wondering if it is better to choose the compressed or the uncompressed version if both are present.

By the way, I do have and have used the Bookmarks Organizer addon.

the lz4 file is not accessable for you, its firefox internal only when places is corrupted or missing. anything else is manually and on your own.

It should not matter.
What might matter is the date of the file, so what bookmarks might or might not be in a particular file.

(Security through obscurity perhaps. There is nothing inherently secure with the lz4 format.)
