Re: cant seem to increase cache space
If you change other Prefs, are those change retained after browser restart?
Fire 750, bring back 250.

Re: cant seem to increase cache space
It appears that (FF 52) is limiting cache (browser.cache.disk.capacity) to 1024 (1048576).
You can see that "interactively"
In about:preferences#advanced, change the override to 5000.
Switch to a different tab, then immediately switch back.
You should see that it has set the value to 1024.
Why are you wanting a higher limit?
Thinking that the higher limit won't give you what you want in any case.
And FF probably has leeway too, where the "1024" isn't set in stone, but other factors can come into play affecting what happens with "cache".
