Recently I started getting the well known "Nvidia Display driver stopped working and has recovered" error every time I start Firefox.
I have FF set to open the windows/tab from the last session.
Disabling HW accel in FF removes the issue, but of course rises the CPU load, makes videos choppy, etc... so it is not a permanent solution.
FF version 57.0.2 64-bit
nVidia driver version 388.59 (latest, updated several times in last month, previous version had the same issue)
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
Hardware: GeForce 1050 Ti, i5-2320, 2x8GB RAM
Any idea where to start looking?

Disable telemetry on the Nvidia drivers: https://www.ghacks.net/2016/11/07/nvidi ... -tracking/
I have a similar system as your own running Windows 8.1 and have h/w acceleration disabled, but don't experience any performance issues.
