Where are deleted Bookmarks?

Post by FrankSMS »

I deleted some bookmarks by accident. Normally I'm used to finding them in the Trash of the Bookmark Manager for the browser I'm using. I see no Trash in Firefox Bookmarks. They aren't in the Recycling Bin. Anybody know where they are?

Hi,

Not too sure, but have you checked your History or can you check your Saved Sessions?

The last time I used them was months ago.
I cannot believe they cannot be retrieved. I cannot believe any browser designer would do that. Nobody could be that stupid. Yet....lol....Firefox proves the impossible day by day. Of course so does Chrome. Both are insanely illogical. Why is this important? Because browsers give us most of our day to day information. They are vital to our lives and our information gathering. And organizing their information is what bookmarks are all about. Then again I'm finding its prudent to save and back up a webpage that is valuable as you never know when it will be taken down.

Well, what can one say, except that, the 1st 3 Rules of computing are "Back-up, back-up, back-up."

Backing up your bookmarks is easy.

Take a look in your Profile folder for "Places.sqlite."

I've got them backed up so I can retrieve them.
But I thought there must be a way of doing that. Why in the world would they opt not to have a Trash folder for Bookmarks? Every browser has that I thought. I've never encountered this before. Except in Chrome but Chrome's Bookmark Manager is much worse than Firefox. Its like this area of the browser is an afterthought. Maybe they expect us to look for an extension for bookmarks that better suits the needs of each user. It does make sense for the program company to make the core program then let others make things that enhance that. Everybody then focuses on their own particular area they're specialized in. This is probably the future in software design and it does make sense....except when the main program updates and many of the extensions don't work anymore....grrrr.

Firefox keeps several days' worth of bookmarks backed up. See the link Limpet 235 gave you, and look at the section entitled "Restoring bookmarks in Firefox 3 and above."

The only caveat is that you need to do this retrieval within a few days, as FF does not keep more than 5 or so days' worth of bookmarks backups. Also, before doing this, save recent bookmarks elsewhere (such as, email the links to yourself?), as this restoration will blast away any bookmark made AFTER that day you are restoring to.

EDIT: I just checked, and my Nightly profile keeps 15 days worth of bookmarks backed up.

Firefox only creates a new backup when it detects changes by calculating a hash value.
Only when this hash value is different then a new backup is created, so if you do not create new bookmarks then you can have backups that go back further than 15 days.

about:config -> browser.bookmarks.max_backups
