Export to excel not launching

This is a rather old bug that I think went into effect between versions 50 and 51. I'm using a website with an "export to excel" button. It stopped working around that time and I downgraded back to ver 50. Well today it seems firefox managed to update itself anyway. I reinstalled ver 50 yet excel no longer launches.

Is this a common issue? No resolution or some lack of support from Microsoft? The feature is basic but it's essential for my day to day work. It doesn't seem to work in Chrome either. Please tell me I won't be forced to go back to IE.

Is there any solutions/workarounds?

I imagine there has to be a thread or two about it around here but somehow my searches haven't found them.

maybe the script is no longer firefox compatible -> webmasters work, there is nothing you can do.

It's a content relationship management system (Ellucian). So no good example without a login.
