If Firefox is your browser of choice, there is a native option that covers both HTML5 and Flash, but it takes some digging to find. First, type "about:config" in the address bar, hit Enter, and click through the confirmation screen. Search for a setting called "media.autoplay.enabled," then double-click to disable it.

The media.autoplay.enabled Preference will keep the HTML5 media from auto-starting in any tabs.
Or instead you can try toggling the media.block-play-until-visible Preference to true
