How best to update Firefox ESR to Quantum

Post by Matty3 »

I changed to the ESR version when Quantum came out, but it looks like it will not be maintained any more by Mozilla.

I am worried about my bookmarks, and the bookmark menu that I have. Will these go away if I update?

Any safest way to update?

(Backup, first.)
Fire 750, bring back 250.

Hi Matty3,
As "therube" mentioned, back-up your Profile before updating.
You can transfer any of your bookmarks/settings etc if you strike a problem.

(Always choose the "Custom" Install.)

IMO, create a new Profile and start from scratch with Firefox 61 Quantum.
Then copy the appropriate data from the existing Profile over to the new Profile.

Too many differences between 52 ESR and Quantum 61, and there's no reason to leave Legacy extensions around to "gum up the works".

.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine has wandered off and I'm out looking for it.

So there's no way to directly update from ESR to Quantum? The only way is to manually download the Quantum version and reload the old profile?

I'm scared to see all the little identifying icons from my bookmarks disappear.

If you backup ... you can always go back.
52... 53... 54... 55... 56... 61.
Hmm.
52... 61.
Hmm.

Backup.
Make sure you can restore from backup, if need be.

Theoretically (& except for extensions which are different matter entirely), you would expect Quantum, on first run, to import, convert data from 52 as needed, & just work.

That is really where I'd put my money.

And that said, there are no guarantees.

But since you have backups...

If I was using it, I would stay on the ESR branch and wait for it to update to version 60.2.0 on Sept 4th.

Hey thanks! Guess I maybe I could wait too....

But I noticed that the ESR version of my Firefox is already giving me a problem.

About a week ago, it simply stopped connecting to one of my regular news sites saying that the SSL certificate was expired already. But on Firefox Quantum, the site loads just fine (as it does on Chrome).

Uhm, not quite CNN :)

I'm an Aussie married to a Malaysian since 2015....to stay updated on news I usually go here https://thestar.com.my/

But I don't understand why my Firefox ESR is refusing to connect. I've contacted the support of the site and they said it's working fine with FF Quantum. :-k

Hi,
Apparently....the old/er versions of Firefox do NOT have the latest security Certificates & so, you receive that response.
I just tried the site in my old Firefox v20 & v57 & got the same result.
thestar.com.my uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate expired on 19/07/2018 5:19 AM. The current time is 26/07/2018 9:18 PM.
So that, appears to be the problem.

It looks like it wants a www. in the url, so, https://www.thestar.com.my/.

https://www.thestar.com.my/ - works
https://thestar.com.my/ - fails

You're right, thanks mate!

But strange though, I wonder why it would behave like this unless that is what the certificate was configured as.

Guess will be staying in the ESR version till Quantum arrives, yeah?
