Force tabs to open to right of link?

Post by Flycaster »

For the most part, my tabs did open to the right of its clicked link. Until recently, this was the case for My Yahoo site-https://my.yahoo.com/(for example,) but now left clicking a My Yahoo link opens in the same tab. This is also happening in my weather site (https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us ... 80.1283572). However, on other sites (such as: https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w205-186/ and https://www.herecomesthesunblog.net/use ... -elements/) and many others, a new tab opens as it should, to the right of the site's link.

I've been using the following extensions: Open tabs next to current, Open link with new tab, tab open/close control 0.0.3, and Tab colors. All with settings directing tabs to open to right of link and then to return to parent when closing. With all these settings on, until yesterday, links were responding as they were directed to.

If we can't arrive at solution with the present setup, I'd appreciate some guidance on just what I should be doing to ensure links open to the right and when closing, the parent tab is selected.

Hi FC,
Just an idea here, but why not try creating a new Profile & just installing one of those extensions,
as 2 or 3 of similar types may be conflicting.

I'd also check what this Pref is set to in "about:config"
> browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent
Mine is set to "False" & a left click opens in the same tab, but a centre, (wheel), click opens in a new tab at the right hand end.

(Always choose the "Custom" Install.)

I know that I should probably work with a new profile, but for whatever reason(s) I just can't get myself to do it. So, orking with my present profile, I decided to try all the different combinations of the aforementioned extensions. And, I think I have come up with a 90% solution. With just two extensions working, Tab colors and Open link with new tab, I'm no getting tabs opening to the right and when closing, going to the parent site. However, there still are some sites that won't give me a new tab to the right. For example, this weather site (https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us ... 80.1283572) continues to open links within same tab. Wonder why some sites (large majority) open as directed, while others (minority) don't?

Thought I was through with this issue, but I'm not. There are times when a link opens to the right of its parent, and then are time when in the same site, another day, the link opens within the parent??? For example, here's a site (https://my.yahoo.com/) that was working fine (link open right) yesterday, but today link opening within same tab.

EDIT
Computer on sleep for about 1.5 hours. Woke it up and tested My Yahoo. WTF, links loading to the right????

I use
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ecommended
Then in the options of the add-on you check to open all links in tabs.

1. Type about:config in the Firefox address bar. Hit Enter.
2. Go to "browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent" in the list.
3. Double click it to change its value to "false".

It's normal for links to open in the same tab UNLESS either the site has coded the link to open in a new window OR the user directs the browser to open a regular link in a new window or new tab.

For example:

<a href="http://forums.mozillazine.org/">Forums</a> => same tab

<a href="http://forums.mozillazine.org/" target="_blank">Forums</a> => new window or tab

The following extension changes links from the first style to the second style if you specify the second or third option for it on the Add-ons page: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addo ... h-new-tab/

Note that scripts can modify all of the above link behaviors.

After hours of testing, I found a combination that works for me on 99% of links. The only one that I can think of that opens in the same tab are YouTube links. For some reason, they coded it so nothing works to open in a new tab with a left-click. For YouTube, only a middle-click will work to open in a new tab.

Try this combination.

Install the add-on "My Homepage"
Install the add-on "Open bookmarks in new tab"
Install the add-on "Open Link in New Tab" Go to Options, scroll down and change (click the radio button) the setting to "Open all links with tabs".

I'm not sure if this part has anything to do with it, but I use DuckDuckGo for my search engine. I go into the DDG settings and change the "New Window" setting to On and save it. I notice that it helps with opening links in a new tab that I put in the search engine. If you decide to use DDG, and you have FF set to delete cookies on Exit, you will have to go into DDG settings and reload the DDG cloud settings every time you open FF.
