i am running debian sid. and ff esr.
when i open a video in the browser there is no audio. for instance this video. the volume is all the way up in youtube. no volume.
i open the same video up in chrome and there is audio.
what am i missing in ff to have the audio play?
i am runnign the ff esr from the mozilla website and i don't have pulse running on my system

it turns out that pulseaudio is required as a dependency

The official builds of Firefox for Linux has required PulseAudio since Firefox 52.0 and later as 51.0 and earlier used ALSA as a fallback.

You should be able to install the Pulse system required from the Debian site
Operating Ubuntu and Linux Mint are based on Debian and the sound is fine from the YouTube with Pulse installed.
