Often when I sign into this forum, and some other sites, using FF, it hangs for anywhere from 15 to 60 seconds searching for c(ustom)s(earch)e(engine).google.com.
Why the hangup? Why is it even searched for? Why is it used? How to avoid this hangup?

Does the same thing occur if you launch the application in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
Do you find any extension with a similar name under Tools->Addons->Extensions?
