Wouldn't 60 ESR have to have all relevant security patches backported to it?

I'd say, if you're looking for more consistency, then ESR.
If you're more concerned about whatever new piece of "pie" FF adds to the "latest", then go with the latest release.

And that said, depending on the user, one may never notice any difference.
Fire 750, bring back 250.

Firefox 60.5.0 ESR is based on the Firefox 60.0 Release but with security and stability fixes. The next major version ESR will be based on is 68.0

ESR was never really something Mozilla introduced to regular users until Firefox 52 ESR was served to Windows XP and Vista users. Firefox 52.0 and later Releases does not work on XP and Vista as to why.

Using Java with ESR was with the old EOL Firefox 52 ESR (52.9.0esr was last). Firefox 52.0 and later Releases including Fx 65.0 and also 60 ESR only allows the Flash Player Plugin from Adobe to run.

Why do Java, Silverlight, Adobe Acrobat and other plugins no longer work?

With the above stated... does that mean that the ESR (css-code in Chrome files) will be hosed like so many users experienced in the 'normal' Firefox?

Certainly seems so. I spent an enormous amount of time last year tweaking the 60 to look and function as much as possible like my pre-57. (Currently on the 60.5esr until EOL with the 68--and not looking forward to a redo, which seems will need to be very extensive.)

Among any number of sources for CSS, I principally used Aris https://github.com/Aris-t2/CustomCSSforFx/releases. Already, when the 61 was released I saw that the CSS to simulate as much as possible the appearance of Status4Evar* was no longer working properly and needed modification. Haven't kept up with the newer Aris releases, but certain it will involve a lot of work, even with the newer Aris code.

*CSS for that for the 60esr, in case you're interested (used in conjunction with https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... gress-bar/) (Note: found elsewhere than in the Aris.)

Code: Select all

/*status bar*/
#browser-bottombox { height: 20px; border-top: solid 1px #505050; }
.browserContainer>statuspanel { left: 4px !important; bottom: 0px; transition-duration: 0s !important; transition-delay: 0s !important; }
.browserContainer>statuspanel>.statuspanel-inner>.statuspanel-label { margin-left: 0px !important; border: none !important; padding: 0px !important;  }
window[inFullscreen="true"] #browser-bottombox { display:none !important; }
window[inFullscreen="true"] .browserContainer>statuspanel[type="overLink"] .statuspanel-label { display:none !important; }

/* Status Bar font/color */
.statuspanel-label {font-size: 9.5pt !important;font-weight: normal !important;color: black !important;}
