In your profile, the folder Bookmark Backups saves the last 15 json bookmarks automatically, so don't worry about those. Did you check your profile for the html file? It should be in the alphabetic file list of the main folder. So in Win 7, it's AppData>Roaming>Mozilla>Firefox>Profiles>[yourprofile]

It doesn't mention the 15 backups. Can't he convert one of those into an html till he finds the source of the problem?

To repair or convert, and then view or use .json or .jsonlz4 files, this is great - https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/bookbackreader.html

Inability to export or to backup can indicate some creeping corruption in the Places database. Save all the backups to a safe place immediately so they don't get cycled out and replaced by bad ones. Then try the "Verify Integrity" button on the about:support page (toward the bottom) and see whether any database problems are detected or fixed.
