Disable adverts in the bookmarks editor (Linux)

I have noticed in recent versions that when I save a bookmark, I have to watch adverts - is there a way to disable this?

What are the adverts for?
Does the same thing occur if you launch the application in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

How are you saving bookmarks?

I use drag and drop and never see any adverts.

Okay, I clicked the bookmark star to bookmark this page. Since I am not a user of Firefox Accounts there was a Sync your bookmarks prompt, which I closed using the "x" in the doorhanger.

Cancelled creating the bookmark. Tried again and there was no prompt to Sync bookmarks.

Yes, that was it, about syncing my bookmarks, only it kept happening several times, but I realise now that I have been struggling with my profile disappearing, everything resetting to defaults etc, during which I have deleting my profile - that probably made the browser think I hadn't used it before. Makes sense, I think.
