Re: The End
A thought.
It would really be a 'bad thing' for MozillaZine's reputation to accept a new help request just before shuting down or to shut down in the middle of a help request before the problem was resolved.

We just keep helping right up to lights out. We are a user help forum first and foremost

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine has wandered off and I'm out looking for it.

Re: The End
Howdy folks, just a few answers. Unfortunately due to the size and age of the current set of forums, I'm not sure OSU is all that interested in continuing to host them without someone owning the actual software to run them. I'm working with them to host an archive of them, but need to start winding down things like databases and dynamic code, as I just don't have time anymore. I will miss you all here as well. If you're interested, I've created https://reddit.com/r/mozillazine/ which I'd be happy to open to others. I find reddit to be a much better interface these days rather than these old forums, hopefully you'll give it a try as well.

"without someone owning the actual software to run them."
Based on http://kb.mozillazine.org/Special:Version I thought we were using free open source software such as phpBB, MediaWiki, and MySQL. Could you elaborate on what the issue is?
"I find reddit to be a much better interface these days rather than these old forums, hopefully you'll give it a try as well."
It might have a better interface but you didn't even create separate subreddits for Firefox, Thunderbird and SeaMonkey. I'm not certain how serious to take that "plan" when it doesn't have something that basic. The KB articles are also important, and reddit has no equivalent. SUMO has zero interest in maintaining something like http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mail_and_news_settings for example.
There already is a https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/ , https://www.reddit.com/r/Thunderbird/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/seamonkey/ . So I suspect we'd lose most of the community.

Re: The End
By the dev team's response to my query IRC is supposed to be the somewhat official channel. (Also note that Moznet will be shutting down in the future as well, and they are currently sourcing for candidates to replace the dev channels on IRC)Peter Creasey wrote:If this board closes. where might SM users go for help?

My two cents -- I like forums much better than reddit (and find them much easier to use).

Re: The End
Bulletin board models (a main focus and offtopic subfora) has always been better at fostering tightly knit communities. Reddit despite what it looks like is more depersonalized social media than forums. When you go on reddit the UX is effectively forcing each sub to compete for attention with the dozens of subs each user has joined, which is bad for deep engagement (aka non-fishing for karma etc)Diane Vigil wrote:My two cents -- I like forums much better than reddit (and find them much easier to use).

I completely agree.Diane Vigil wrote:My two cents -- I like forums much better than reddit (and find them much easier to use).
I like this forum format. It is a phpBB powered forum of which there are about 50 million in use (and of course it's free).

Just transfer ownership, as I imagine Chris Nelson did with you?kerz wrote:Howdy folks, just a few answers. Unfortunately due to the size and age of the current set of forums, I'm not sure OSU is all that interested in continuing to host them without someone owning the actual software to run them.

Wouldn't it be far more time/work efficient just to do nothing instead?...but need to start winding down things like databases and dynamic code, as I just don't have time anymore.

Re: The End
We got to keep this forum alive somehow. It has proved invaluable to me and others over it's lifetime that existing Fx sites can't match. Ask a question, get an answer right away. Time to step up to the plate to keep it going. I'll do whatever I possibly can to help in the matter.

Re: The End
As will I.
Another thought would be to open a new set of mozillazine forums with its own software on a different hosting account, then adding a link on mozillazine.org to the new forums. That would enable mozillazine.org to be archived without losing the threads, and for people to carry on at the new forums.

Re: The End
Good thought but it will need somebody to step up. Not something you can put your hand up for if you don't have the knowledge or resources. Mozillazine is fairly unusual to have lasted this long with one owner. I have seen many fall by the wayside over the years
