Hi folks,

I'm really in a panic here. I never had this happen. Been using Firefox for years. I simply went into options and cleared history and deleted cache/cookies etc. Shut down FF and reopened a little while later and all tabs gone - just one now which is MSN. No info from history or recently closed tabs. Its like a brand new session. I even restored a system restore (Windows 10) from 2 days ago and it was successful BUT Firefox did not change. How is that possible.

I've been trying for 2 hours with many threads to no avail. Is there any file in my profile that will give me the info I need to at least see my old tabs/links info so I can copy it? I had like 85

I went here and dropped some files in there but I get nothing. I'm afraid my sessionstore-backups is been over written. I have only 3 files in there all dated after this happened.

Thanks!

I think it's gone for good. If you have a set of tabs you want to open with, I suggest in the future you bookmark them - right-click on a tab > Select All Tabs > Bookmark Tabs.

Session Restore is pretty good but it's not 100% reliable, bookmarking your favorite tabs gives you a reliable, convenient backup for times your session fails to restore.

I never had this happen. Had to be a glitch.

Yea I hear ya I used Tab Session Manager at one time but FF has been so solid over the years. I have a URL backup from like 2 months ago. Copy All Tab URLs add-on. I gotta revert to that.

With all those files in my profile I was hoping one would give me some info on the tabs.

More things to try maybe:

First, set Windows to show hidden files and folders:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

Deleted File Recovery

A tool like Recuva can recover some erased files. This could be useful to track down recently removed files.

* https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva

The usual path for a Firefox profile is:

C:\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

Individual profile folder names have a random portion, like

d39tx201.default-release

Can you find any recently deleted recovery.jsonlz4 or previous.jsonlz4 files?

Shadow Copies

You can use a utility program to search inside restore points to try to locate an old file that's usable. (Please do NOT try to use the built-in Windows System Restore for this because you probably would lose data.)

Download and run one of these two programs:

* ShadowExplorer: http://www.shadowexplorer.com/
* System Restore Explorer: http://nicbedford.co.uk/software/systemrestoreexplorer/

Within the most recent restore point shown in the program, you can explore along this path to see whether you can find a shadow copy of your profile:

\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\your-profile\sessionstore-backups

You can export any promising recovery.jsonlz4 / previous.jsonlz4 files to a convenient location such as your currently live desktop.

Any luck?

Hi,

Hidden files are already being shown. (I'm a PC/Network admin) so it should be easy enough for me to try your suggestions which I really appreciate.

I'll check these steps out when I get home.

Thank you!

I used Shadow Explorer and found them perfectly! from 3/23 exported two files you mentioned to my desktop. I made a copy of the ones in my profile (not that it matters I only have a few tabs open)

C:\Users\myprofile\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\17gbeilh.default\sessionstore-backups * I do not see a recovery folder here as mentioned below in the link.

I thought then just copying over the newly exported files to this location would suffice? but no dice. I found a thread where you helped someone with same problem pretty much so hoping this is what I need OR if I can open these files and just copy out my old links I can move them to a Word doc. and load individually. At this point I don't mind I just want them back.

I followed the directions to a T but to no avail. That was 4 years ago and theres no mention of new file names like .jsonlz4 just the .js

So I have the files if you could give me maybe some new instructions i'll try them!

Thanks!

***EDIT: ok I figured out how to use the scrounger site (which looks like written by yourself) Good stuff. And for the life of me my recovery.jsonlz4 / previous.jsonlz4 files exported when using the Session History tab to export URLS only gives me 2 tabs. ugh

I go back to 3/21 and it won't even read the files and each file has data. 635kb for example. This is insane. If I try my current tabs that I been using since this debacle it reads the file and show all 18 tabs. (I'm still researching and reading)

I do not understand why my exported files from 3/23 are only showing two tabs when I CLEARLY had like 85. I'll try from 3/11 thats my last date available.

All these recovery files from Shadow Explorer are not working. But the size of the files lead me to believe the data is there.

All set. I was able to pull the files from my system image created 3/2 and got 95% of them back. I'll call it a huge win. :) now to do a complete back up of these URL's

Congratulations! I've never had any luck with file recovery software like Recuva, but I never heard of ShadowExplorer - nice! Still, as it says on the ShadowExplorer home page, it's not a aubstitute for regular backups. Since drives can fail, it's best to keep backups on another drive, whether a USB drive or internal.

I use Macrium Reflect free edition
https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree
to make daily system image backups to a USB drive, this has saved my bacon on a couple occasions.
