Tabs not opening to the right?

Post by Flycaster »

This has been going on for quite a while and I figure it is about time I asked why. Although I believe that that I have set things up so that when clicking on a link, that link will open to the right of the link's tab with a new tab. This does not always happen (used to happen all the time a while back.) What happens now is that the link's tab opens in the same spot as the link's tab and not in a new tab to the right. Here's a site upon which this happens, for example: https://www.wunderground.com/hourly/us/ ... KFLBOYNT21. I open the site and click on Hourly, it open over the original site. Then clicking on Wundermap, and it opens over the Hourly site. So, I then have three sites open within one tab instaead of the desire of having all three sites opened in separate tabs??? However, on most sites, new tabs do open to the right as expected. Thanks.

On most sites the links are links and not Tabs in the original site configured to open in the page you are on.

I'm no expert here, but it seems that the url I gave as an example could be behaving differently than most of my other urls. That is, the links in almost all other of my urls, open to their right in a new tab.

An example of another URL that works the way you expect would be beneficial.

Here are some that work the different way and open in the same tab.

https://www.accuweather.com/ https://www.weather.gov/ https://weather.com/ https://abcnews.go.com/

When you click the Board Index, Mozilla Firefox or Firefox Support links at the top of this page, they open in the same tab.

Even though I have a add-on that forces opening to the right, I guess it just won't work with everything. No big deal, but a disappointment.

.
Don't need an add-on. On Mac if you hold down the command key (control on Win) ALL links open in a new tab.

I started to post about these -- Mine = False -- BUT I, too, did NOT get New Tabs to the right when testing OP's Hourly and Wundermap links - they Both stayed on the same Tab, so I didn't post. I accepted, as OP did, that some pages just function differently.

If I go to https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us ... KFLBOYNT21 and click on the hourly tab while holding down the command key (control on Win) it opens in a new tab. If I click on ANY OTHER link while holding down the command key (control on Win) it opens in a NEW TAB.

No need for an add-on; since you are on WIN just hold down the control key while clicking on a link and it will open in a new tab.

NOTE: you'll find settings under Tools -> Options -> General -> Tabs. Put a check in the box for "Open links in tabs instead of new windows". You can also chose if you wish Firefox to jump to the new tab or stay in the current tab.

FYI - wunderground.com is now part of The Weather Channel which is owned by IBM.

Did you check these prefs:

Normal links (a href):
browser.link.open_newwindow
1:current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;

Links opened via JavaScript:
browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction
0:divert always; 1:divert never; 2:divert no features

Understood, but I like things to be as automatic as possible. Just don't want to have to be pressing keys when I don't have to.

Hi FC,
Just another suggestion here...
But have you tried CENTRE/WHEEL clicking any of those links?
No keys involved.

Seems to function O.K. here.

My Prefs "browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent" is set to FALSE.
Therefore, any new link should open way over on the right....at the end. (I think.) :)

Any need to change any thing?
