Change number of columns in new tab page

Firefox allows you to set the number of rows in the new tab page, but there seems to be no way to set the number of columns. Is there an extension that can do this? Thanks.

Search for 'speed dial' on the firefox add-on page. There are lots to choose from that offer many more options than what comes as standard.

The size of a tile is fixed.
If you want to see more columns then you can zoom out the page.
