Moving to Firefox Support as no bug has yet been identified here.

That could be comparing apples to oranges if you are not saving the same web site as the OP.The one I just took of this page is 215.3 kB and is a .png file.

What is the size of that screen area and does it contain complex content?
If the size of a PNG image is already 2500 kB then a JPG image might even be larger and that might cause Firefox to switch to PNG, both JPG and PNG are available for a screenshot and AFAIK then Firefox prefers PNG, so I'm not sure why you got a JPG image previously.

if I take screen shot with a download cmd, it will open, and want to be saved as a .png as you say.
if I take a screen shot by the copy cmd, and open by way of paste, (I use word), so i can edit anything on the screenshot, and choose save as a picture then, I have a choice to save as a .png, .tiff., .jpg, .gif, or .bmp. The most important thing though, is before I save it, I can edit the size, or anything in it. I use this for ALL my pages that contain information (as in say financial, or buying something on the web and a confirmation page-etc.) that I want to save. Then you can print it.

The built-in Firefox Screenshot prefers PNG, but if the file hits a certain size threshold, the format is switched to JPEG. As far as I know, there's no setting to change that behavior.
