Any idea why some of them turn into the proper icon, while others remain the 'globe?'

Re: Bookmark favicons
I suspect it is a setting on the websites.

Re: Bookmark favicons
It's directly related to the security settings in Firefox as to what you have allowed under /preferences/Privacy and security.
Try using Strict or Standard and see if the icons show on a trusted site having no icon showing.
My security settings are somewhat strict with cookies and trackers blocked entirely and on latter versions of Firefox I see few Site Icons.

Doesn't matter what you say, it's wrong for a toaster to walk around the house and talk to you

Re: Bookmark favicons
Sometimes it is due to redirects: your bookmark is not for the specific final URL that ends up being displayed.
Other times it is related to instructions from the site not to cache the icon. I wrote an extension for users who want to work around that (not automatic, you need to specify the sites where you want the caching instructions modified on the fly: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addo ... bookmarks/).
There probably are other reasons that I am not remembering.
