gmail hangs on backspace key even in safe mode

Firefox 90.0. 64 bit. Windows 10.0.19043. When composing a new email, if I press the backspace key firefox hangs for about 5 to 10 seconds, even when in safe mode. Does not happen in other browsers. Might have something to do with saving a draft copy because that message appears.

And it doesn't happen here with Firefox 90 either.
If no improvement using Safe Mode, do you have the same problem if you create a new profile and test it with no extensions or non-default themes installed?

Did you modify the Backspace key action from "do nothing" (2) to "go back" (0)? This involves the browser.backspace_action preference in about:config.

No key modifications. Problem persists even with a new profile.

What is the text of the referenced message?
How is the account set up, as POP or IMAP? In Thunderbird the menu path is Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->Server Type at the top right of the dialogue.

I missed the 'gmail' part in the Subject:.

So in that case, you're using Gmail's web interface, not an email client to interface with Gmal, correct?

And as mentioned, did testing in Safe Mode help?

I'm using just the gmail website, not a client or interface.

The compose window has two messages at the top left: "New Message" and "draft saved". While typing, "draft saved" appears about every ten seconds. When I press backspace (holding it down) to erase many characters and then start typing again, it sometimes hangs. If I do several of these backspace/typing operations quickly, I can get Firefox to hang for about twenty or more seconds. Nothing can be selected, no tab can be opened, etc. Then, all at once, the missing characters that I've been typing suddenly start appearing and Firefox stops hanging.

Safe Mode did not help.
