Yes, it is I yet again: Until I created new Fx 90 profile yesterday, the toolbar always showed the colors of its icons, using any of the installed themes. Now, with two exceptions, the bar is quite drab no matter which theme I select.

As is always too often the case, searches for information about this has not turned anything useful; for an example, one link had instructions to open Customize Toolbar and use options no longer there.

Correct instructions, it really need no be expressed, would be quite welcome.

The built-in toolbar button icons are monochrome in Firefox 57+, but add-on icons still should have their usual colors.

Strangely, some more of the icons are now colored after I clicked on them, but those that are monochrome don't react to multiple clicks; the ones that have turned to color survived a restart of Fx 90.

9 now colored, 9 still drab; perhaps those latter will eventually relent.

Yet another profile created, and clicking on the toolbar icons, Politico, WaPo, and perhaps one other icon failed to turn to color; I don't remember if that third one even has any color, and I forgot to check that before logging on to write this. Maybe I will remove/replace the first two to see what happens.

At any rate, close enough for government, and as both a volunteer and career fire chief, both departments were county sanctioned, I was in government, so that shall suffice.

Politico,for example, still does not show a colored icon, but when I clicked on the drab one, I was able eventually to find the media entry, which had four "P" icons, I was going to ask how to use one of them. Now, in my continuing battle with Fx 90, when I click on the icon, Politico opens with NO icon. I even created a second entry for the site on the toolbar, which also failed to show the icon. I tested a few other toolbar entries, which load the sites and show their icons.

Why is Politico now worse than before? What do I do now,other than, of course, give up and replace Firefox with a scriptorium?

I don't see a Favicon on Politico either in Nightly. There is a 'red P' in Edge/chrome. Bookmarking Politico in Nightly does not store a Favicon either, just the generic 'globe' icon.

Thanks for checking. That said, my previous posting was quite incorrect: I was looking at the entry in the wrong place, as the icon and the things to click on do show in the search bar. That has to have been where I finally found the four "P" images that I wondered I might use. Politico has long shown that red letter in Fx for me; not sure in which profile I last noticed it, and cannot check while I have the current profile in use of course. I was led astray, or more likely led myself astray on not noticing nor remembering that the entry where I found the images was in the search bar Nonetheless, until I found it and investigated it, I am rather certain the monotone icon did appear in the tab of the open site, as do other site started from the toolbar.

Oh, site icons? If the site allows caching, then Firefox should save the icon in the favicons.sqlite file and use it on an ongoing basis. If the site doesn't allow caching, Firefox won't save the icon. If it's highly irritating, you could use my add-on for caching bookmark icons, but it might not be worth the effort, really a personal call.

It must allow caching, as the icon in an older Fx profile shows a red icon, as it has always done until now. What would happen if I were to change favicons.sqlite to old.favicons.sqlite and restart?

Old bookmarks didn't have their stored icons removed. However, as noted in the full description for the extension: "Starting in Firefox 72, if a site instructs Firefox not to cache its favicon, Firefox won't store it even for bookmarks."

What would happen if I were to change favicons.sqlite to old.favicons.sqlite and restart?

Firefox would start from scratch for bookmark and history site icons.

I am sorry, I don't understand:

1. Why, for example, is the Politico icon red, as it was in a profile using Fx 89.* and many earlier releases, and is still red using Fx 90.0?

2. What would happen, given your description of a new favicons.sqlite? Would it correctlly replace the existing icons, or do something else?

Politico is kind of weird case. Their home page specifies several different icons (apple-touch ones omitted):

Code: Select all
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="https://static.politico.com/cf/05/ee684a274496b04fa20ba2978da1/politico.png">
...
<link rel="icon" sizes="32x32" type="image/png" href="/favicon-32x32.png">
<link rel="icon" sizes="192x192" type="image/png" href="/android-chrome-192x192.png">
<link rel="icon" sizes="96x96" type="image/png" href="/favicon-96x96.png">
<link rel="icon" sizes="16x16" type="image/png" href="/favicon-16x16.png">

For me, Firefox tries to load two of those files:

* https://www.politico.com/android-chrome-192x192.png
* https://www.politico.com/favicon-16x16.png

In both cases, the site returns an HTML response which looks like this (this is the second one):

Code: Select all
<figure class="art ">
    <div class="fig-graphic">
        <img src="https://static.politico.com/dims4/default/24d02f9/2147483647/resize/1160x%3E/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.politico.com%2Fb8%2Fb0%2F16745e704246beaaafc23cb38f86%2Fapple-touch-icon-144x144-precomposed.png" alt="politico favicon" title="politico favicon"></div>
    </figure>

So... that doesn't seem to work as a site icon in Firefox but presumably it works in Chrome/Safari.

Probably Firefox should use the first tag (rel="shortcut icon") instead of the third and fifth but I don't know whether there is anything we can do about it as users. You could file a bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

This is from the last entry on Bugzilla for #1722618:

"The favicons they serve are actually html documents containing figure tags and served with an html mime. We don't support those as favicons.
I'll keep this as an enhancement to evaluate whether we should support that, considered other browsers are, but I'd not hold my breath over that, it's an edge case and adding more quirks to the Web doesn't sound good to me."

Why they worked before the Proton version of Fx and don't now is nothing that I understand.

Likely just a coincidence. They didn't "just" work on the user interface for that release.
