Fonts Looks Weird

Post by zlaer »

When I check the "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" option in the Settings > General > Language and Appearance, I get funny characters in some websites. It seems many icons and buttons on many sites appear as small boxes with four characters inside. This is NOT normal.

Is this a fonts issue with ff? Should I install some fonts package?

Those usually are missing characters from a downloadable web font, sometimes called remote fonts. They can be blocked by uBlock Origin and other extensions, or if you disabled downloadable fonts in about:config.

Theyre not blocked by uBlock Origin since I tested it with uBlock disabled.

I started ff with all addons disabled and I still have the same issue.

If you mean 'gfx.downloadable.fonts.enabled' in about:config thats not it also since its set to true.

So whats the fix?

Its amazing how stupid mozilla doesnt fix this problem thats been around for at least 10 years now.

And any help from other sources doesnt resolve the issue at all.

Looks fine on my end.
Three shots.
1.FF, looks unaffected by JavaScript & uBlock
2.SeaMonkey, JavaScript is blocked, site does not display correctly.
3.SeaMonkey, JavaScript enabled, site is fine.

That actually sounds like you're blocking fonts.

But how am I blocking fonts? I disabled all addons but the problem is still there.

Is this option in your settings unchecked? "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above".
Mine is unchecked cuz I dont want sites to choose their own fonts.

You are by telling Firefox to not allow sites to use their own fonts.

So why would ff have that option then? That makes 0 sense on ff's part.

Makes perfect sense if the reader is visually impaired and using text to speech makes for a better translation.
What sort of man would put a known criminal in charge of a major branch of government? Apart from, say, the average voter.

It also makes sense for pages where you don't have any issues with the fonts because they are all standard Windows fonts or you running some other OS and already have them loaded.
