FF takes 5 minutes to load on opening browser

Post by petergo »

hi there,

running latest version of FF and win 10pro.
I update FF version every weekend if there is a new update.

For many months when I open the browser the FIRST time for the day, it takes about 5 minutes to load or start.

I have settings to clear cache on exit.

I have gone through my add ons, and keep just 11 that I find essential.

Is there an app or extension that can tell me which add-ons are hogging most resources, and or which are causing FF to take so long each morning to get going?

I considered starting in the mode with all extensions etc disabled but that won't tell me which ones are causing the problem.

kindest thanks
best regards
peter

Try disabling all extensions but one and then close and restart the program. (Disable them by using menu path Tools->Addons->Extensions->click on "Disable" for every extension but one.) See if the problem is present. If not, enable an additional extension and close and restart the application. Repeat this procedure until the problem reappears. The last enabled extension will be the cause of the problem.

Are you using "File -> Exit" or Exit in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list as using the close X on the title bar can cause issues ?

Are you using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear any data ?

What security software do you have?
Are you allowing Firefox in your security software ?

1.. Dan, thank you, will 'play' with that later.
Hope all well m8, on the right coast

2..Dick, thank you.
I usually exit FF by right clicking on an icon I have in the task bar, and selecting "close window'

Are you suggesting there is a correct way to exit FF at end of day, I could try that

Hi Peter,
dickvl is saying that using...> File > Exit is the preferred way to close Firefox.
Causes less probs. (I've never had any probs caused by just closing Firefox in any way I choose.) :)

What about dickvl's other Q's?

Might be a contributing factor in them.

during the day I have two windows open with about 12 tabs open in each, and it's lightning fast, everything I do

Only problem is first thing in the morning when the desktop gets cranked up, and then I open FF

That page/link is very old though. (2015?)

Malwarebytes used to be very quick to load/update & run BUT lately, (maybe a year or more ago), it's become a snail in all aspects.

Plus, Peter is not running the Pro version, just the freebie.
Does not run or load until required....so doubtful that it's that that's causing the problem.

Peter, How much RAM are you running in that PC?
Is anything else loading at the same time as Firefox? (Check in Task Manager?)

hi Mr. L

12Gb memory, it's a Dell Inspiron desktop, not 2 years old

FF is the first thing I run,
I have used Task Manager and checked the start up tab, nothing major there, a couple of things rated as low.

This is a relative new problem, about 3- 6 months now, and decided today to find out why.

Once the FF window is open ( very fast ) I then open other things such as whatsapp, TB, etc

The actual browser opens instantly, it takes however a long time for a tab to work or I have an icon to clear cache, which also takes the first time, a long time to do it's thingy

thanks again

I bet it's one of extensions. I'm impacted by a very similar issue and in my case it's caused either by LastPass (more probably) or uBlock (least probably) extensions. After 1st launch I can see via Task Manager that Firefox process is reading plenty of data from hard disk. Until this loading is complete, LastPass extension show status "disconnected", any attempt to open a web page ends in infinite page loading.
After reading all the data it needs, LastPass suddenly switches to "connected" state and I can open any web page I want.

g'day again

Adblocker Pro appears to be the culprit.

FF loaded and started much faster with Adblocker Pro disabled.

I also exited using the menu / file / exit method.

thank you everyone

Is there another extension or add on similar to Adblocker Pro that may not effect the loading of FF on start up?

cheers

Hi Peter,

We're happy to see/hear/read that you finally found the errant extension.

We here, recommend using "uBlock Origin" as it does not use many resources & just works.
