Send email link no longer works for me.

When a web page is being displayed and from the Menu Bar I click on "File/Email link..." it takes me to outlook.com, which is my default mail handler, and just sits there showing the animated email icon. It was working in a previous version of Fx but I can't recall which version suddenly broke it. It couldn't be that many versions ago. Another thing I notice there appears to be some other window that shows up before the one with the email icon. I assume it might be a window of some sort but it disappears so fast it looks like a 'flash'. Tried in safe mode with the same results.

Anyone else having this issue or knows how to fix it?

Outlook.com is specified in Settings under Applications/Content Type/Mailto. The generated URL is https://outlook.live.com/mail/0/deeplin ... iltouri=%s.

I fired up MS Edge for a test and entered the Mailto URL generated by Firefox while on CNN and successfully opened outlook.com with the new mail screen along with the link for the CNN page I was on in Firefox. This is how Fx worked until recently.

With a new profile I can open up a new email with the link to the page I invoked via email link. This is by pasting the url to CNN I gave above. Disabling all add-ons did nothing. Now to try and narrow it down to a pref.

Fixed my problem by deleting selective files in my profile and seeing if their recreation fixed the issue. My last deletion was a group of five files which fixed the problem. At this point I didn't try to find the one that fixed it. Leave well enough alone as they say. It also could have been a combination of these 5 files.

Darn things works for a while then it doesn't. Guess I'll live with it unless it's a known problem and gets fixed.

Do you have the mailto content type in files & applications?

i.e. Menu Bar > Tools > Settings > General > Files & Applications

I can add a mailto content type with a custom action by setting the following pref to true, then clicking a mailto link, then opening settings, then changing the action.

* network.protocol-handler.warn-external.mailto

Remember to reset the pref to false (default) after changing the action.

Try deleting or renaming the mimeTypes.rdf file if present and the handlers.json file in the profile folder. The handlers.json file will be recreated on startup.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. AFAIK I have everything set correctly. Outlook.com is my default mailto. As mentioned when I send something on a web page to outlook.com vial email link all I see is the animated outlook.com email envelope. There is nothing else on the screen to indicate I am in outlook.com.

Have you tried outlook.com or another web email service? As mentioned things were working fine about a month ago. Outlook.com would open with a new mail screen and the link I chose would be in the body of the email ready to add a receiver and then send.

I installed the addon Outlook.com mailto – Get this Extension for Firefox (en-US) in order for outlook.com to appear as an application in mailto. The URL in the addon to outlook.com is not correct. I tried to change the "bad" url to the correct one but the addon shows up as permanently disabled in my list of addons. I guess you can't modify the XPI file like in the past. Is the URL stored somewhere else where I can successfully change it?

I got the mailto link working with Gmail.

* login to Gmail account
* run protocol handler code with mail.google.com url in Gmail tab

i.e. Menu Bar > Tools > Browser Tools > Web Developer Tools (ctrl+shift+i) > Console

Sorry, I don't use Outlook so I can't test the outlook.live.com url in the support.mozilla.org link answer.

I don't know how to change the url in the addon. Ask the addon developer.

I assume the registered mailto protocol handler url is in the handlers.json file in the profile folder. It's for me, but I don't use an addon.

The only thing that I've tried that almost works is this. The links you mentioned don't get me as far.

I added the following to Handlers.json https://outlook.live.com/mail/0/compose?mailtouri=%s. When I email a link I now get into a new email. However the link is not included in the message as it was when it was working. Perhaps the URL is not quite right. It's good enough to open a new mail screen but not good enough to plug in the link. Any thoughts on this? I tried looking for the proper way to send a link to outlook.com but didn't find anything. I thought Edge would help me out but so far I can't find a send link to email function like the one in Fx.

You can also check/compare the handlers.json file as that is where actions are stored.

morat.. None of the links you gave work. I wound up using MS Mail as my mailto program in Fx. I'm satisfied now that I can send email links in Fx once more. Thanks to all for your help.
