Hello! I am new to Firefox.
When I click on my "Yahoo check email" icon located on my desktop, the Internet Explorer browser automatically opens.
My Question is:
How do I get my Mozilla Firefox to open up instead of the Internet Explorer? How do I get certain programs to use my Firefox browser as the default instead of the Internet Explorer?
I am running XP Pro.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! buddhistbrain

Re: Internet Explorer opens instead of Firefox
unfortunately, this doesn't work because Yahoo's utility to make Yahoo the default mail client only works for IERyanJ wrote:buddhistbrain wrote:Hello! I am new to Firefox.

what you can do is make a Firefox shortcut that points to mail.yahoo.com by on your desktop doing right click > new > shortcut and making its target
Code: Select all
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" "mail.yahoo.com"
for most other programs following RyanJ's instructions should work

Dear Tim (Mini-Geek),
It looks like your idea worked! At least I was able to get an icon on my desktop that will direct me to the Yahoo mail using Firefox.
From there, I was able to change the "firefox" icon for one that looks like an envelope, and then renamed it, "Yahoo Mail".
I think this will work fine. Thanks for both your input as well as Ryans! buddhistbrain (Brian)

I Can't disable MS Internet Explorer under Windows XP-Can'u?
I have done this (Ryan's approach) too and gone beyond that. I have removed (Add/Remove Programs) MS Internet Explorer and deleted all the files on C:\Programs\. . . I found in its folder and removed its folder.
HOWEVER BUT! I get error messages when programs like NetZero call for a browser. The message says there is a problem in the BASIC code string looking for MS IE. Also, when I click on a link (outside of/in any program other than, FIREFOX), it does not open Firefox and I have to copy the link and paste it into the browser to get it to work.
I KNOW, I KNOW I've gone too far. I know that XP built teh IE Code into the OS and third parties can write hooks to the code (Likely my problem with Netzero as it trys to send up an adver and assume I've got IE because I'm on XP).
But, I thought I might not be alone in this crowd and thought to ask if anyone had a better approach to disabling IE under XP. charlessenf@yahoo.com

Error is MS Visual C++ Runtime Error (not BASIC!)
I MY IMMEDIATE PRIOR POST, I misspoke regarding the error received. "The message says there is a problem in the BASIC code string looking for MS IE." The actuall error message seen (when clicking on a mailto" link (an email address in a browser windo). I believe it is identical to the error message received each time I start NetZero (Now, more properly called netnineninetyfive). CHARLESSENF@YAHOO.COM
MS Visual C++ Runtime Error (not BASIC!)
C:\Program Files\Internet Explore\iexplore.exe
"This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact teh application's support team for more information."

Charles,
It's Wednesday! I haven't checked my email for a few days (arrrg!).
Have you figured out your situation yet?
If I were in your shoes, I might try doing a "system restore" to an earlier day (before I deleted the microsoft IE). I don't know for sure if this will help, but it may be worth a try.
Good luck. Brian
