Hi There.
I'm using Mozilla/4.8 [en] (Windows NT 5.1; U) ver 0.7 on Windows XP.
My problem is that when I click on a link to a .rar I get the contents "converted to text" dispalyed in the browser window. How do I get firebird to open the download dialogue instead ?
There is no option for rars under Tools, Options, Downloads. I think my question is really, How do I add an extension to this list ?
Thanks in advance

Hmm. My problem with this answer is:- Why is it not a problem with zips, exes, wmvs. These file types have entries under Tools, Options, Downloads where I can change the default behaviour of Firebird with regard to these filetypes. Why can't I do the same thing for ANY file type like I could with mozilla, netscape etc ? What is the purpose of Tools, Options, Downloads if I can't add file types to it ?

I was just trying to give you a clue that this is a problem with the server - not with the browser. This is most likley a problem with the file being sent with the wrong MimeType.
If you care to provide us with a link we might be able to see what the problem is.
One simple solution is to muse right-click and save as - if you see that the extension is .rar. However that does not work in all cases - not with site that use a downloads-page.

I remain unconvinced that the server is to blame. Other browsers work fine and It would work in FB if I could manually add entries to Tools, Options, Downloads.
I can't right click to save them (or I wouldn't be here in the first place) as the site does use PHP searches to download the files.
The URL I'm trying to DL from is http://www.xscripting.com/modules.php?n ... load&cid=3
Some of these are ZIP and work fine, some are rar and don't (the second one in the list called Autotrade V0 is a rar). It seems unlikely that the site builder would get the rars wrong (all of them) and the zips right (all of them). All of these links behave as expected in I.E.
Sorry to harp on but it seems a simple problem with a simple solution but I can't manually configure how file types are handled. I don't understand why the ability to do this has been removed. It was (is ?) possible with Mozilla. If i used Mozilla I wouldn't need the plugin you suggest as I could just go to Edit, Preferences, Navigator, Helper applications (Mozilla 1.4 anyway). And configure .rars to ask me what to do. Problem solved.
Either this functionality has been removed or I can't find it.
Help... Or must I abandon FB to get this functionality back ?

Look here:
<img src="http://www.winterkvist.com/mimetype_error.gif">
The file IS being sent out as plain/text and is treated as such also by the browser - wich is in accordance to standard. To put it short - this is a server configuration error.
However - there is a solution for this type of problem being introduced in the Pre 0.8 version of Firebird. You might want to check that version out and try it.
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/f ... atest-0.8/
However - I will not recommend this build/version to anyone before also having pointed out this bug:
http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/
But that installation/uninstallation bug is serious if you choose to install Firebird in any other directory - with a lot of other directories/software.
I have installed serveral versions using the default directory and a standard installation without any problem.
And yes, I do know that this is not an issue with IE since that browser is not handling files according ot standard and guesses/sniffs for the file-extension before deciding how to handle the file. That has proven to be a security risc and will be changed with ServicePack 2 for Windows XP.
