Progress. Thanks for your help malliz. I did as you suggested and saw that US was ticked. I then ticked British, but when I returned to Thunderbird my language was still corrected. I repeated the exercise, only this time clicked on add dictionary and (re)installed the British English one. There was no message about incompatibility; the only thing was that the restart firefox box stayed greyed out, but I re-started manually. It made no difference, however, as when I typed 'colour' it was marked as a mistake.

Thanks for the invitation Limpet. I think we spell much the same even if we talk a bit differently. I took up your suggestion and found the same problems, but in the process the UK version suddenly came alive. I don't know what I did, but something worked.

Thanks for the advice here, I have finally managed to install British English dictionary successfully into Thunderbird.

I downloaded the .xpi file and then used 7-Zip to extract the 2 relevant dictionary files (en-GB.aff and en-GB.dic) to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\dictionaries and heh presto no more typos.

The help here has saved me many more frustrating hours of trawling through the internet

Thanks
:-)
