British English Dictionary not compatible !

Progress. Thanks for your help malliz. I did as you suggested and saw that US was ticked. I then ticked British, but when I returned to Thunderbird my language was still corrected. I repeated the exercise, only this time clicked on add dictionary and (re)installed the British English one. There was no message about incompatibility; the only thing was that the restart firefox box stayed greyed out, but I re-started manually. It made no difference, however, as when I typed 'colour' it was marked as a mistake.

Actually I just installed again for Firefox 2.0.0.17 and after reboot the English dictionary is back again
Windows 98 - KernelEx v4.5.2, Avast 4.8, ZA 6.1.744.000

Thanks for the advice here, I have finally managed to install British English dictionary successfully into Thunderbird.
I downloaded the .xpi file and then used 7-Zip to extract the 2 relevant dictionary files (en-GB.aff and en-GB.dic) to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\dictionaries and heh presto no more typos.
The help here has saved me many more frustrating hours of trawling through the internet
