Alice brings up the issue that has kept me checking this forum for years for answers:

Alice writes:
I also tried this link:
http://members.aol.com/jrzycrim01/mozil ... est-HS.wmv
.....but I had to OK an "opening" dialog before I could open the file in my default application (WMP) which then opened externally, so it seems that the server is sending that WMV file with an incorrect MIME type.

P.S. Here is what I see with SeaMonkey for the "misconfigured" file:
Image
...."likely to be" is how SM describes cases where it is guessing at the content, which is why the box to set a helper application is 'greyed out'.[/quote]

firefox used to be able to handle these years ago and i cant understand why they dont seem to think a fix for this is important. i run across plenty of large video files like the ones that vectorspace describes the problem for and it is a major hassle because of the hoops you have to go through to preview the download. ( click save as then while its downloading find the partial file and attempt to open it with VLC)

vectorspace, if the reason is server error why cant there be a fix that employs the same interpretation of the file that ie uses? ie has no problem figuring out what to do with them. even if you click always do this for this file type firefox ignores it and asks everytime anyway. i would love for this to be resolved

I am trying to see these clips:
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/stanleycup2007/hno/

The clips on that site are direct links to .asx files and don't really require the WMP plugin, just a program such as Windows Media Player that can open .asx files, but it will "use" the new plugin if installed:
June 2
Post-game - Game 3: Anaheim Ducks at Ottawa Senators
goes directly to"
http://secure.cbc.ca/html/hockey2007/g3 ... t-post.asx

I get a message, "Sorry, this file can only be viewed within Canada."

I went looking for an asx video file for testing but came up empty. Here is an .asx link to an audio stream for New Zealand National Radio I found:
http://www.radionz.co.nz/__data/assets/ ... tional.asx

With the new WMP plugin np-mswmp.dll, the asx file opens in a Firefox window titled national.asx (video/x-ms-asf Object) with the WMP plugin console at the bottom of the page and the WMP "visualization" in the body of the window, and the radio stream plays. What happens for you?

If you want to test to see if your WMP plugin is working for embedded .wmv files, try this link:
http://members.aol.com/jrzycrim01/mozil ... st-LS.html

You should see a black area with the player buttons underneath. The video should load when you press the "Play" button.

I think I may have made the mistake of posting this in the wrong thread. Looking back I see that people were talking about Vista, and I have XP. Sorry about that.

I tried the first link(Stanley Cup), I still get sound but no video.
Tried the New Zealand clip and I could hear it, and tried the aol link and I could see and hear it.

So the plug-in for WMP is working, but the clip isn't shown...maybe the clip itself is the problem?

Right-click on the video, click on options, performance, change hardware acceleration to zero. See if that helps.

No. There is still no video. I put video acceleration to none at nothing changed.

I tried it with another site:
http://www.tribute.ca/movies/Pirates+of ... +End/12938

I clicked in trailers(left column), and selected the WMP player in the smallest size. I had sound but no video, same thing with other two sizes.

Perhaps my version of firefox is corrupted? I've got 2.0.0.4 so I don't know what the problem could be.

Is there a way to uninstall firefox fully (ie. going into regedit and take out occurrences)?

The video for that trailer (WMP, low res) worked for me. Checking the location of the embedded media, it goes to mms://media.tribute.ca/Trailers/potcawe_sm.asf

Before you blame Firefox, does the video work if you click the mms link? If you get an "External Protocol Request" dialog box, click the "Launch application" button. For me, it launches Windows Media Player as an external application and plays the video.

I didn;t say I was blaming firefox. I wondered if my version could be corrupted, and was asking about a step to correct it.

When I click on that link WMP loads. I have sound but no video.

The mms link loads Windows Media Player as an external application so if you have no video then I doubt that it's a Firefox issue.

I was going to suggest a WMP site such as http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html but it seems to be down at the moment. You could try a WMP group like http://groups.google.com/group/microsof ... ia.player/ or http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... fault.mspx

If you want to try a clean reinstall of Firefox anyway, download a fresh copy of Firefox 2.0.0.4 from www.mozilla.com then see
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_ ... On_Windows
and
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installing_Firefox#Windows

Discovered today that the WMP plugin won't work if you have DVDSANTA on your PC. The video will play but you'll get no sound. If you try to test it too many times, FireFox will also crash. I've tried the uninstall and reinstall routine twice just to make sure it's DvdSanta that's causing this. Still don't know why it interfered with WMP plugin.

XP and Vista users of WMP 10 or 11 should just have to run the exe. Since it installs the plugin solely to the Firefox plugins folder, it won't work if you use a zip build or if your version of Firefox is not properly registered in the Windows Registry.

I've run the exe with no joy. Even though it says the install was successful the .dll file is nowhere to be found. I've also extracted the .exe and then tried to extract the dll from the .msi but I get the message that all the files in the .msi are broken. I've downloaded it several times and it's always the same. Any thoughts?? Also is there not somewhere that I can just download the .dll??
Thanks

You couldn't find the file np-mswmp.dll anywhere? Note the hyphen in the filename.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_Media ... new_plugin
The plugin installer adds the file "np-mswmp.dll" to the Firefox installation directory plugins folder, typically "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins". If Firefox is not installed or if the Firefox installation directory cannot be located, the plugin will be placed in another location such as C:\PFiles\Plugins

Negative! Those were the first two places I looked before searching the hard drive. Somethings fishy with there installer on my end or possibly theirs. I did read one of the KB aritcles which provided a link to an extractor which I thought would easily do the trick, lol. It failed when having the first option checked so I checked the last option which extracted it but with improper filename. I renamed the file hoping that would work and I'm guessing/hoping it did. I've tried it on most all the links provided within this topic and each has opened or played in the manner that they were suppose to. This so far seems to be a treat.

Also, just to make sure, it is OK to leave the program files/media player/plugins.dll(3 of them) in the media player folder? These are still seen by Fx which has been mentioned also but I'm wanting to make sure.

Yes, it's fine to leave the Windows Media Player plugins (npdsplay.dll, etc) in place. No need to disable the WMP plugin scan.

Did you do a Windows search of all hard drives? One of the links in the WMP KB article said that sometimes the file may be placed on another drive.

Otherwise, I don't know why the installer isn't working for you. You do have Windows XP SP2? That's the minimum requirement according to the download page.

Only have one drive for sure and yes I have XP SP2.
One more question if you have the time, I notice this plugin does a nice job of placing the media player in a tab or single window for that matter. Will Fx allow one to play a local mp3 file within the browser? I clicked File menu > Open File and it opened the media player up in a tab but will not play the file and it may not be suppose to but am curious about that.
Thanks

You can use Universal Extractor to extract the msi installer from the exe installer, and then to extract the plugin from the msi installer.
