I'm trying to change my default Search Provider to http://clusty.com (and not having much luck).

I used the document @ http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_Provider as a guide, but in spite of following instructions to the letter, it doesn't seem to work.

With regard to the google.src file, that didn't exist in the searchplugins folder, so I was forced to create a new one which I named anyname.src as mentioned in the above doc. But since I was starting with a blank file, I simply copied the three lines referred to so that my file looks like this:

method="GET"
action="http://clusty.com/"
{input name="input-form" user}
(change these brackets { } to < > I have to use those otherwise the code won't appear in this browser)
(I changed "q" to "input-form" because that's what appears in clusty when it completes a search. I assume that's correct?).

In about:config, I changed the value browser.search.defaultengine and browser.search.defaultenginename to "clusty" (without quotes). The third one mentioned in the kb doc called browser.search.defaulturl doesn't exist in the about:config file. Am I supposed to create that?

In addition, I changed the value for browser.search.selectedEngine and keyword.URL to respectively "clusty.com" and "http://clusty.com" (both without quotes).

But if I just type a phrase in the location field, FF displays the usual "Can't find server..." with the URL appearing as, in this particular case, http://www.clusty.comththt (my search string was the "ththt" bit). As I had it configured before, it would jump to my previous custom search engine which was http://ixquick.com/

Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

install a search plugin from here -> http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html?name=clusty
and change the keyword.url preference to "http://clusty.com/search?input-form=clusty-simple&query="

Thank you madperson. Changing the keyword value fixed it (the plugin was already installed). :)

Incidentally, the src file isn't needed apparently because I moved that to a new folder in case that was the cause of the original problem.

Last but not least, I'd suggest updating the http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_Provider kb doc to save anybody else becoming confused by its current contents.

Firefox 2.0 uses anyname.xml for search engines; also the \searchplugins\ folder is now in the Profile folder but I think the "move" happened with Firefox 1.5. The old *.src files can be found in the ~\profilename\searchplugins\searchplugins-backup\ , but the images for those files are gone.

Yep, I agree that KB page needs some work, but whoever edits it needs to have knowledge of all the changes made to the search engines module with both 1.5 and 2.0, and maybe even 3.0 - which looks slightly different on my 3.0 Profiles, but that may because I haven't "imported" search engines from an older version.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine has wandered off and I'm out looking for it.
