Can you reach google using the ip address? http://72.14.215.99/
You can try: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diag ... Firefox%29

I encourage you to try following the instructions in http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php. I had the problem and this seems to have cleared it up. It has been a couple of days and I have not seen any negative symptoms. So far, so good...

Wtf?
Well it seems like more people than just me are having trouble with google sites.
On my laptop I can connect to the standard google search site using either http://72.14.215.99/ or just www.google.com. But, for the love of god I cant access gmail cuz every time I type in gmail.google.com, or use the automatic link I have set up in FireFox, it gets about halfway through the connection then just stops on "Connected to www.google.com" and it hangs there for eternity. Its been like this for about 48 hours now.
Are google servers down, or is this a problem on my/our end? Solutions, suggestions? Backdoor ways to check gmail without having to connect to google.com?

Wtf?
Ya, I tried the link above but all I get is a 404 not found.
Is there a XX.XXX.XX.XX style address I can use that will take me to the gmail login page?
I went to an internet cafe today and checked my email there, worked fine. It must just be my laptop. Seems some other folks' laptops have had trouble with google access too in this forum.
It was working OK just a few days ago too... Now it can't get past "connected to www.google.com" and just sits with a white screen. Would it be the server I'm on? I'm at a hotel in Brazil that has a pretty weak wireless internet network, but it functions.
Why would it work for a few days and then stop?

Wtf?
Well, I went ahead and searched for Smitfraud and found other sites that have the same information and access to the program. Did the steps as described and there's no change. I dont think I was infected with smitfraud to begin with, I havent had any of the symptoms described. Its just that I cant get to gmail from my laptop.
http://72.14.221.17/ takes me straight to the standard google search site, not gmail.... ?
Thanks for your help btw!

Yep. Seems that google routes everything through the same pages. Try to click "More" and if it works the gmail is at the bottom right.

"More" doesnt work, unfortunately It gets to "connected to ssl.google-analytics.com" and then hangs there, much like the problem previously described. God that's so weird.
What about POP3 access? Im not really sure how that works, but would it be an alternative to getting to gmail without having to connect to google sites on the internet?

Yes, you could use Thunderbird to connect to Gmail using POP3 and SMTP.
See this link for information on required server settings, or use the New Account wizard in Thunderbird to set up the TB account to access Gmail. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_acco ... _providers

RE: Cannot connect to www.google.com with Firefox
I have a PC with Debian unstable Linux, amd64 port and a AMD Athlon 64 +3500 chip.
Like the other people in this thread, I have been unable to connect to "ssl.google.analytics.com". Has any progress been made towards solving this problem since the rest of this thread was writen in Sep 2007?

So there may be some connection between the problems.
