Don't Like Google Toolbar - Can I Remove It?

Post by Elcie »

Hi,

I've tried several times to remove the Google toolbar from the add-ons section under tools. However as soon as I restart Firefox I get that Google screen that says "thanks for installing Google Toolbar" and it's automatically reinstalled.

I really hate Google toolbar, not all that crazy about Google period. Is there anyway I can remove this thing or is disabling all I can do?

Thank you for looking.

A quick search (using Google!) turned up this page -- http://www.google.com/support/firefox/b ... opic=11800

I tried using the control panel but google toolbar is not there,

I tried the advice on the web link but that didn't work.

So I right clicked on the toolbar then on customise then dragged the google toolbar to the open window so that it is no longer there, not uninstalled but at least out of site.

Can't say that I'm impressed with this extension, nothing against google, just don't like not having the ability to remove it from with in firefox, it smacks a little of IE.

If you don't want the toolbar, don't install it. Get the non-toolbar version and install it.

How do you know you don't want something till you've tried it?

Try the Manual Uninstall method.... http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_add-ons
Basically you may have to physically remove the addon from either your Profile or the Installation Directory, wherever it is hiding.

Then do this....This procedure will reset the extensions manager, after removing the extension, so Firefox rescans your collection of addons, to see what is really there.

Look in your Profile Folder (see below for how to find it) and Delete these three files
extensions.ini
extensions.cache
extensions.rdf
Make sure Firefox is not running when deleting these files. Firefox will regenerate these files on restart.

Read this for how to find your profile folder... http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folde ... ile_folder
In Windows ... this Folder may be hidden .....
To show hidden folders, open Windows Explorer and choose Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders.
Also this Extension may help to locate it quickly https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/545

I don’t know what you guys are thinking here, but this google toolbar business is terrible. We shouldn’t have to go through …

All of this to get rid of the darn google toolbar. And that window your giving me that I can’t close unless I respond to it, is really over the top. Please fix this! Until then I will use Opera or something else.

Firefox used to be cool. But not now.

Did you downloaded Firefox from a non-mozilla site?

It is Google's product that is the problem, not Mozilla's. When you downloaded Firefox from a site other than http://www.mozilla.com/ the bundle you downloaded was with the Google Toolbar. Unless you got the toolbar from Google itself, then you may have a few unexpected passengers too.

The solution is to only Download Firefox from HERE http://www.mozilla.com/ This contains NO Toolbars, from Google, or anyone else.

Again, the Google Toolbar is NOT a Mozilla product, so Mozilla will be unable to fix it.Go hassle Google, and the providers of the site you Downloaded Firefox and your toolbar from.

Google provide instructions for uninstalling the toolbar HERE http://www.google.com/support/firefox/b ... swer=45081

The procedure I outlined was, in the OP's case, was because the above procedure was not working for them. .

Absolutely not. Why? Do you know something, why do you ask? What I did do is just upgrade Firefox by going to ‘Help’ then ‘Check for updates’ in my Firefox browser.
