I googled and found the Ask site and they told me that some malicious entity had removed the uninstall feature from my computer. So they gave me a way to remove it. Then my computer slowed way down, seconds between a key press and its appearance on the screen. That time, using Hackthis, I found that Ask had slipped into my Registry and I removed it. Things started working normally again, but then my browser was redirected again. I searched for the Ask.com site but it no longer gave me the good advice. I read this site. I found an Ask.com cookie. I removed the cookie. What's next?

If the Ask.com toolbar isn't showing up in Windows Control Panel's list of installed programs or in Firefox "Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions" see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_toolbars for other ways of removing it. The Ask.com toolbar may be listed in the Firefox Extensions list under another name, since it can be bundled with other software.

You may also need to reset any Ask.com preferences listed in about:config . If that doesn't work or if the entries come back, reset all preferences using the information here:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resetting_preferences#Resetting_all_preferences_to_program_defaults. You may need to use the manual method of deleting preference files, since it is possible that a user.js file may have been added by whatever installed Ask.com in the first place, which will add back any preferences you try to remove.

You can check the references for the Ask.com Toolbar listed here,
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions#Ask_Toolbar in case they are helpful.

Also scan your system for spyware and other malware. A list of recommended malware removers and online forums that can help you are listed here:

FishyDave wrote:I have had exactly this problem, I think after installing some free FLI to MP4 transcoder software. It seems that it enables Firefox's 'keyword' functionality (if it isn't already enabled) and then hijacks the default setting (which does a Google search.)

To fix, put 'about:config' in the address bar to enter Firefox's configuration page (I don't think you can get at this from any of the menus.) Look out for The 'keyword.URL' setting, and change it back to one of the recommendations shown on this page http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keyword.URL

The first one worked for me. I now get a Google result instead of an Ask one if the webpage fails to load. If you don't want this functionality at all, then look for the 'keyword.enabled' setting and set it to 'false.'

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Ask.com is retarded just for this.

The answer is in the Advanced Firefox Settings.

My “right click” search [terms] was fine last night. It opened just fine in a new tab and searched via Google.
But this morning it went to Ask.com instead of Google.

So I did what I always do when I have a computer problem. I try to fix it myself and when I can’t, I call for my hubby [company computer guy – literally]!

I have pictures (PNGs) to go with the explanation of what to do so it’s easier to follow.

We did the usual routine checking of “tool options” [found nothing].
We then went to our control panel. We found and removed the “Ask Toolbar” from our Remove and Add Programs. Still, nothing.

Next we opened a new browser window, and into the address bar we typed, “about:config”
In short, once the list was brought up, we searched for anything with ASK [that refered to the ask.com site] or ask.com, removed it [modify] AND replaced it with Google.

Problem solved!

Directions:
Upon opening the list, you’ll see: Preference Name, Status, Type and Value.
Under “Preference Name”, search for: Keyword.URL
Under “Value” it will say, <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedirect?o=20008&gct=&gc=1&q=">http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedi ... t=&gc=1&q=</a><!-- m -->
Change that by right clicking on it and choosing “Modify”, and changing it to:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=">http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=</a><!-- m -->

Before Pic: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword1_found.png">http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword1_found.png</a><!-- m -->
After Modified: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword2_changed.png">http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_key ... hanged.png</a><!-- m -->

Next, in the filter: type in “ask” and look for anything that says ask.com to bring up a smaller, more refined list.

Under “Preference Name” look for “extensions.snipit.chromeURL”.
It will show: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedirect?o=20008&gct=&gc=1&q=">http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedi ... t=&gc=1&q=</a><!-- m -->{sear...
Highlight it, and click “Reset”. This will erase the “Value”. Leave it blank. If it doesn’t, then click “Modify” to remove it manually, click “ok”.
(*note, after closing your about.config window, it will be totally removed from the list)

Before and After: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword3_snipit-removed.png">http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_key ... emoved.png</a><!-- m -->

Next, in the filter, type in “browser” and under the “Preference Name” look for:
“Browser.search.defaultenginename”
For the “Value”, it will show ASK, “Modify” it so it says: Google

Pic: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword7-modifed.png">http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_key ... odifed.png</a><!-- m -->

Then under “Preference Name” find: “browser.search.order.1” and “Modify” it from ASK to Google

Pic: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword8_modify.png">http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword8_modify.png</a><!-- m -->

Finally, find: “browser.search.selectedEngine” and “Modify” it from ASK to Google

Pic: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword9_modify.png">http://kd8cmv.us/change-aboutconfig_keyword9_modify.png</a><!-- m -->

I hope this helps everyone.

This was fantastic! This helped when nothing else seemed to help!

I did not know such a config window existed! Cheers man! You rock!

After having deleted the ask toolbar from extensions and using the ad/remove programs option in Control Panel, I still had the same problem, so I tried the about:config method, but there is no reference to Ask.com in there...but Ask.com still redirects me for every failed web-load! Help! This is driving me crazy....

type about:config in your address bar, then search for keyword, then replace the keyword.URL from the ask.com redirect to something else, for google you would want http://www.google.com/search?q=

Simplest thing to do is reset your browser to its default settings.

IE: Go to Tools
Go to Internet Options
Go to the Advanced tab
Click on Reset...
Confirm the Reset.

You might lose some bookmarks, yada yada, but it's worth it to get rid of any annoying spyware you might run into.

Thank you. Marvellous stuff. Though for some reason I didn't have browser.search.selectedEngine in my list.

Thank you.
