browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
This setting is only really useful if you either want to remove the autocomplete function entirely, or limit the list to a shorter length on your screen real estate, now that titles are a part of the result. Setting to 0 (zero) will just stop all autocomplete results.

browser.urlbar.matchBehavior
This setting will have the greatest impact on how your results are found, regardless of what sort of results you remove from the ones available (which will be limited in following entries). I've not seen results as I'd expect from this setting yet, but I'm not done working with it. A setting of 0 (zero) should give you a result of finding your URLs based on what you type being anywhere in the URL or page title. A setting of 1 should result in placing of what you type anywhere in the title or URL being first, followed by the URL or title beginning with what you type. A setting of 2 should result in only showing results based on what you type being at the beginning of the URL or page title.

This worked for me since all I wanted to do is disable the autocomplete entirely.

Thanks Euchre..

Setting browser.urlbar..maxRichResults = 0 does not fix the Awful bar! I even tried setting the value to -1 with horrible results. Help! How does a soul achieve the usable v2.x effect? p.s. I think this is a nice place to vent!

Setting that to 0 (zero) turns off the autocomplete function, not alter it to autocomplete like Firefox 2.

I have just received the following message from admin at spreadfirefox dot com:

-----------
Download Day 2008
We did it!

We set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in 24 hours. With your help we reached 8,002,530 downloads.

You are now part of a World Record and the proud owner of the best version of Firefox yet!

Don't forget to download your very own certificate for helping set a Guinness World Record.

To which I swiftly replied with:

No, I am not!!!

Unless you remove this hideous thing called 'Awesome' bar or at least give me a way to revert back to the 'old' FF2 style (BOTH in appearance AND search algorithm) if I wish, and that without using 3rd party add-ons, I am certainly NOT!

FF3 lasted exactly 1 minute on my machine and was swiftly removed - faster than you can say 'give-me-my-FF2-bar-back'! I then reverted to the tried-and-tested FF2 v2.0.0.15 and will continue to do so until I am 100% assured that *I* can get what *I* want (it is *MY* PC and ramming new 'features' down my throat against my will does not normally go down well in here!).

Regards,

Happy FF2 User

The one thing that I still do not understand about the new behaviour of the location bar is that what you type is retained longer than anything that gets in there any other way; that is, from bookmarks or following links. What is so magical about what you type that it has to be kept forever? Why can that not be cleared when you clear the history (without having to tweak multiple settings, which is what I did)?

As to the browser.urlbar.matchBehavior setting, according to the description that I read, a setting of 2 is supposed to match only word boundaries. It does not seem to do that. Either that setting is not working, or the description was wrong.

The problem seems to be that clearing history doesn't fix the fact that your last bookmark visit is effectively a protected form of history. I need to dig more into the SQLite files, but I think the fields used to evaluate visits for non-bookmarked visited history and bookmarks is the same. This would mean the frecency scoring is still assessed for bookmarks and thus not effectively cleared when clearing the usual history.

I had noticed that it doesn't seem that the browser.urlbar.matchBehavior is not obeying, but I think that is ignoring URLs and just using the page title field. Basically it's only governing finding something like "stand" in "understanding" in the page title and nothing else.

I think it's fair to say the Places system still needs a good bit of refinement if it's going to work in a way that encompasses all Firefox users.

I've nothing significant to add other than adding my voice to the requests to bring back FF2 behaviour.

Dump the clutter and resist the urge to over complicate in the name of "features" , just give me a list of relevant URLs, no favicons, no titles, no silly gold stars, just do it the way it was in FF2.

Thanks

Now to find a bookmarks thread, that's something else that needs sorting out ;o)

I myself would like to urge the devs to keep the awesome bar: it is so much more useful than the old unusable one, for me.

WE can't do anything about the Location Bar. We are just fellow users, not the Developers.

Have you read the sticky HERE ... viewtopic.php?f=38&t=685365

All we can offer with Firefox 3, is to make the behaviour almost the same as Firefox 2.
There is NO way to make Firefox 3 behave TOTALLY like Firefox 2.

I am sorry you did not like Firefox 3, but you do not HAVE to use it.You can uninstall Firefox 3, and forget about it.
Firefox 2 will be supported for another six months, at least.
Maybe in that time someone (maybe YOU) will come up with an extension to mimic Firefox 2 or a Build of Firefox 3 with the Firefox 2 Location Bar.

Do YOU have any solutions ? You can try to fix this yourself ! Let's keep this CONSTRUCTIVE, please.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. -Albert Einstein

Please DO NOT PM me for support... Lets keep it on the board, so we can all learn.

How can I get the scroll bar back? The rest of the new address bar doesn't bother me (yet), but I would really like the scroll bar back so I could scroll down to an address that I know is there instead of having to start typing it.

Awsome toolbar is a threat to privacy because I do not want anyone to be able to type in a word in my toolbar and see where I have been. That creeps me out

Problem is, addons are already dropping support for FF2, and it's only going to get worse.

Get your own computer, and/or stop browsing porn on a shared computer. Problem solved.

actually, this is still a problem, even if you have your own computer and don't use public computers. Even with your own computer often friends, colleagues, family, etc. will likely use the machine at some point.

In addition, this is an argument to get Firefox out of the workplace and to get it removed from library, school, or other computers where use by multiple persons is expected.

And, it's not just porn that's the problem. Political pages, research sites, blogs, forums, job/employment site and a number of other sites could be embarrassing or at least something you don't want other people seeing.

This feature really needed more thought before being built-in and automatically installed and enabled. It really needs an *easy* config setting to disable it (not having to hack about:config and modify the chrome style sheets).
