Re: Vista's Data Execution Prevention is killing Firefox 3
A DEP error is extremely serious, whether it is due to Firefox or a plugin. Don't mess around with these. You should file a bug report if this hasn't already been done. Data execution prevention (DEP) prevents the OS from running data as if it were code. That is the primary mechanism that is used by just about every Internet malware to invade a computer.
(But don't file a bug report about just any crash, OK? Those should be handled with the usual automatic crash report. One carefully written bug about the DEP crash will suffice--but don't delay too long trying to make it perfect.)
Don't even think of it. Take a look at what Daniel Veditz had to say about it:

Yeah I get many crashes a day. It is completely unreliable, and awaiting a fix from Mozilla.

I get the crashes in XP, but not in Ubuntu ( Linux).

Thanks Kieran, hopefully we can get this sorted out with the Firefox team.

Please don't post more examples there or add comments. It's not necessary to help confirm the bug. The existing crash reports will suffice, and you'll just get in the way. If you want to post crash report IDs here in this thread, that would be fine, but don't litter the bug report.

My specs:
Vista Home 32 bit
2gb Ram
Core 2 Duo E6600
--- Could the problem be the Core 2 Duo chipsets? Seems all the people with the problem have one?

Re: Random Firefox 3 Crashes- Vista Data Execution Prevention
When downloading any file, as well as right-click => save as on a picture, FF3.0 crashes and windows DEP pops up. Mine never crashes randomly... any download triggers it.

Re: Random Firefox 3 Crashes- Vista Data Execution Prevention
I can reliably cause FireFox 3.0 to crash with "Data Execution Protection" fault when loading the Turner Media Player plugin. I have many other addons, etc. installed, but if I go to http://www.tbs.com and try to watch a video there, FireFox 3.0 will immediately crash. If I disable the plugin, then no crash. Trying to locate a dump file/diagnostic log to attach/submit so you can work on it further. I have NoScript installed, so it's very clear to me that it's the plugin. When I disallow most sites, I get only static screens no video. It's only when I permit cnn.com on NoScript does it attempt to load the plugin and then instantly crash. I have tried un-installing/re-installing the plugin to no avil. The only solution is to disable it in the plugins but that mean I can't watch the video either, lol.
System details: Dell Inspiron 530 (desktop), Q6600, Vista x86 32-bit, Home Edition, 4GB RAM, PAE/DEP enabled, FireFox 3.0 (release).
Good luck tracking this one down.
