Quicktime error #0

Everytime I try to play a video that uses quicktime, i get the message

QuickTime failed to initialize. Error # 0
Please make sure QuickTime is properly installed on this computer.
after clicking ok, i get this

The plug-in performed an illegal operation. You are strongly advised to restart Firefox.
and a checkbox to "not display this message again in the future"

quicktime was working fine before, and suddenly stopped working and this happens. i tried a clean uninstall multiple times, but it still doesnt work. help? thx
