Failed to Find Settings for Email Account

Post by tommyk »

I had Thunderbird installed previously and had to do a restore and most downloads and files were lost. I downloaded Thunderbird again and followed instructions. I entered my email account and password and got a message saying: "Failed to Find Settings for Email Account" The account is valid and works.

It worked fine before but couldn't get connected after re-installing Thunderbird.

Who is the email provider? If it is not a major provider it is possible that the required settings would not be found in Thunderbird's database. You can add the required settings manually -- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ma ... figuration

The provider is TDS. I installed Thunderbird automatically with no problem before using TDS.

I have the settings but can't figure out how to get to the incoming and outgoing settings

The link I posted above provides guidance on that.

I have now been able to receive emails but cannot send them. I keep getting a timed out message. I double checked my setting and they are correct. How do I attach an image of my settings to see if there is anything wrong with them?

Reduce them to around 600 x 500 or so in your favourite image editor, (Be sure to remove any personal info.)
& upload them to your favourite image hosting site.

Rather than going through the process of downloading the image, here are the specs:

Description: SMTP
Server Name: tds.mail.net
Port: 587
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication Method: Normal Password
User Name: (my name)

This is exactly what my internet provider said to enter

And what is the full text of the error message you are seeing when trying to send?
What security software is running on that system?

This is the message:

The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.tds.net timed out. Try again.

Originally I had Avast, but after my computer crashed after a major Avast Upgrade it's now automatically Windows Defender. I'm not sure about Defender but as for now it's there and Avast isn't.

The User Name in the SMTP configuration is typically your account log in name with that mail service. Some systems require your full email address here, others just want the portion of your email address before the @. Per this page re setting up TDS to work with Outlook, it appears they require your full email address.

"The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.tds.net timed out."

While it could be due to the wrong username this error message sounds like something more basic was wrong in the settings. If it was a wrong username/password I'd expect a login failure instead.

http://settings.email/tds.net-email-settings.html

The second web site links to http://settings.email/thunderbird_configuration.html which describes how to add a yahoo account in Thunderbird. That means you have to deal with issues such as whether 2-Step verification is enabled (if its enabled you need to get a app specific password and user it instead of your account password), and do they by default disable "Allow apps that use less secure sign-in". However that web page never mentions tds and doesn't appear to be provided by tds. If you go up several levels you get to http://settings.email/ which claims it will provide your email settings if you enter your email address. I tried that with one of my yahoo email addresses and it worked as expected.

Does tds provide their own mail server or do they outsource it to somebody such as yahoo or gmail, while using their own domain name in the mail servers and email addresses?

I suggest you start by getting the POP or IMAP account working. Then deal with trying to send messages later on. You can configure your Thunderbird account to temporarily use another accounts SMTP server as a workaround.

You've got SSL/TLS on port 587. Try STARTTLS, the usual security on port 587.

I can receive emails but still can't send. Still getting a timed out message for outgoing emails.

I turned off Windows Defender and Firewall and still not luck.

I'm almost positive I've got the right settings for outgoing mail.

I don't know if TDS provides their own mail server or not.

I prefer to stay with Thunderbird because most of my contacts use my current email address there.

I'll try customer service with TDS but they usually are useless.
