I have a number of Gmail accounts and use TB for all. Some I want to auto log in and some I want to be asked for the PW.
Just set up a new account that I want to auto log in. The first time I logged in the check box to have this auto log in was not there.
I know I solved this months ago but can't remember how.
FYI I added the PW to the PW manger; however, there must be a switch that tells TB to auto log in or not.

You could experiment with mail . server . server# . remember_password using the config editor. It looks like you might be able to manage it on account specific basis. See https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/doc ... counts_API . Unless you change those settings it seems to basically just look to see if there is a stored credential, and if there is try it. If that fails (or there is no stored credential), it will prompt for a password.
If you defaulted to using OAuth2 as the authentication method when you added the Gmail account it stores the token instead of the password. Tokens are managed the same way as saved passwords (you can delete them). If you are using a token Thunderbird will try to avoid ever asking you for the password when it refreshs the token if its about ready to expire.
I suggest you check what the authentication method is for each account in Thunderbird. You will probably need to set it to "normal password", not check the checkbox to save the password when you are prompted for it, and set "enable less secure apps" in your google settings at https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps if you want to always be prompted for it. This seems safer than messing with the remember_password settings.
You might investigate using KeePass and https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunde ... src=search as an alternative to the password manager. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Protect_the_profiles_contents if you were just uncomfortable with how the password manager securely stored passwords. Unfortunately none of the "good" two factor authentication methods such as Yubikeys work with Thunderbird (except for storing the private key for Engimail/PGP)

Thanks but as I recall there is a simple way to set the flag to automatically log in. I should have stored the "magic".

Solved the problem!
Went to the TB config editor and set
signon.rememberSignons > true
Restarted TB and when asked to log into the new account there was a checkbox to remember log in; checked it and logged in.
Restarted TB and all was good.
Went to the TB config editor and set
