TB Window Sizing

Post by JSS3rd »

All of a sudden, TB windows, both composition and inbound messages open full screen, and I can't find any way to permanently resize them. Any thoughts?

With Thunderbird closed, navigate to the profile folder and locate and delete the file Localstore.rdf. That file stores information on Toolbar and window layout size/position settings and can be deleted to resolve problems such as you are seeing. It will be recreated by Thunderbird as needed.

Thanks for the quick reply, Dan.

I deleted localstore.rdf but, when I reopened TB, the problem remains the same. And, so far, localstore.rdf has NOT been recreated.

Have you again closed and restarted Thunderbird?

Yes, several times. The problem remains, and localstore.rdf has NOT been recreated.

Are you running Ccleaner or any other sort of clean up utility on that system?

I've used Ccleaner seemingly forever on TB, with no adverse results. The only options I have checked are Internet Cache, Internet History, Download History, Last Download Location, and Compact Databases. As I said, Ccleaner has never caused any problems with TB.

Didn't the xulstore.json file replace the localstore.rdf file in Thunderbird?

Thanks, morat. I hadn't realized that xulstore.json was the new storage file for Thunderbird as well as for Firefox.

After closing TB, I deleted the xulstore.json file created when I first opened TB this morning. It was recreated when I reopened TB, but the problem cited in my OP remains. Not only that, but my TB customizations had been removed.

Interestingly, when I checked the profile of a TB saved at the end of December, both localstore.rdf and xulstore.json files were present. I copied both to my current TB profile to see what would happen; when I reopened TB my customizations were back, but my messages still opened full-screen.

Apparently, the xulstore.json file is updated every time TB is opened, as the time/date of the file always shows the time/date TB was reopened.

I'm really working beyond my depth here, so any more help would be greatly appreciated.

It wasn't. I always open TB full-screen, but I want my message windows, both composition and received messages, to open in the same smaller size. As I said, my xulstore.json file is updated to the date/time that TB is opened. Whether it is changed internally, I can't say. I can open it with a text editor when TB is closed, but I'm reluctant to make any changes when I don't know what to look for.

"1. Open xulstore.json in text editor (while TB closed)
2. Search for: "sizemode":"fullscreen" (may be multiple entries)
3. Change it to: "sizemode":"normal", save file, restart TB"
Make a copy of the current file and save it under a different name before editing make the changes to xulstore.json.

I'd already done that, but nothing changed; both TB and message windows open full-screen.

As a test, I exited Thunderbird and set the sizemode key for the 3pane window from "normal" to "fullscreen" in the xulstore.json file.

i.e. chrome://messenger/content/messenger.xul > messengerWindow > sizemode

Then I opened Thunderbird to see the 3pane window in fullscreen mode.

Then I opened the error console and ran the following code to see the 3pane window in normal mode.

Code: Select all

window.fullScreen = !window.fullScreen;
Then I restarted Thunderbird to see the 3pane window in normal mode.

@JSS3rd

Can you try testing the above code in the error console?

Instructions:

* open config editor
* set devtools.chrome.enabled preference to true
* tools > developer tools > error console
* copy and paste code into error console
* press enter to run

Error Console command line
