(Resolved) New Messages in Thunderbird marked as read

I have Thunderbird 91.5.1 running on a new Windows 11 21H2 (but the problem was the same on my Windows 10 computer).

New e-mails are downloaded properly, but they are automatically marked as read immediately on download. Sometimes, 3 or 4 of the new e-mails are not marked as read (seems to be random), most of the time they are all marked as read immediately upon download. I have watched this happen as the new e-mails show up in the Thunderbird window, each new e-mail appears, and for a tiny fraction of a second it appears to be marked as unread and then immediately (and without human interaction) changes to marked as read.

It didn't used to do this.

How do I fix this?

POP or IMAP account? If POP, have you tried compacting the Inbox folder?

It's a POP account. I just tried compacting the folder. We'll know when the next e-mails arrive if it worked. UPDATE: Problem not solved.

Did you install the "Bitdefender Antispam Toolbar" add-on in Thunderbird ?

I do use Bitdefender, I had turned on the Anti-Spam, so it is now turned off, and we'll find out soon if that was the problem. Thanks, Eckard

The issue mentioned by Eckard fixes the problem. I told Bitdefender to stop scanning my e-mails.
