Bug: "Your messages has been sent" forever when SMTP mail

Post by thoste »

One of my accounts is at mail provider yahoo.co.uk

I can login via browser at

https://uk.yahoo.com/?guccounter=1

So login name and password are valid.

In Thunderbird I already setup this account in the past and I receive occasionally emails via POP3.

Now I wanted to send an email via SMTP from this account. It is the first time since a longer time.

After hitting "Send" Thunderbird request a password for the mail server.
"Login to server smtp.mail.yahoo.com with username xxxxxxxx@yahoo.co.uk failed

This is strange since TB uses the password all the time when
connecting and retrieving POP3 emails.

But ok. I entered the password (same as on web browser mentioned above. You remember?)

After some flickering a popup appears:

Status: Your message has been sent
Progress 100%
<Cancel>

This dialog popup does not vanish. It is shown forever.
It is reproducable

So even if my SMTP setup for this account would be wrong Thunderbird should show a meaningful notification why the sent process is not
really finished.

If I hit "cancel" button popup appears:
"Sending of message failed.
Unable to authenticate to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
Please check the password and verify the 'Authentication method" in 'Account settings--->Outgoing server (SMTP)"

The message remains in "Draft" folder

According to webpage
https://getmailspring.com/setup/access- ... -imap-smtp

I setup SMTP as server in Thunderbird as follows:

Servername: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Port: 465
Connection security: SSL/TLS
Authentication method: Normal password
Username: xxxxxxxxxx@yahoo.co.uk

Whats wrong?

I'm using OAuth2, not "normal password" with my Yahoo IMAP account. I think it was last year they changed the requirements. You'd normally use the same authentication method with the account and its smtp server.

I added a Yahoo IMAP to a different profile a couple of days ago using the Mozilla ISP database settings. It used OAuth2.
