If I've read a message in my Inbox folder, then go to messages in a filtered folder, then back to the Inbox folder, a totally different message is high-lighted and displayed. Any way to correct this?
Thunderbird 91.9.1 (64-bit) on Linux Mint 20.3

You might try using separate windows for that back and forth switch. Right click on the desired message and select "Open message in new window". That way you can view both the Inbox message and the Filtered folder without having issues with focus.
