i didn't suggest removing <user>/Library/Thunderbird/ , though you might want to. I was suggesting that if you want to completely start over that you need to delete the profiles.ini file too so that Thunderbird doesn't look for any of the deleted profiles.

hi.. I just got back from a short trip...

once again I want to thank you for all your help, tanstaafl.. and others on this thread too..
I have decided to start over.. uninstall TB, remove 'Thunderbird' dir from <user>/Library/, and start over..
see if I can get TB to connect to the server BEFORE I transfer any profiles.. if it still can't, there's something wrong...

but I most probably I won't have time to do this before Christmas..

hi... I'm back.. it's been a busy last 30 days.. (and had to take another short trip...)
I'm ready to uninstall TB and start over.. is the way to uninstall apps in MBP just to put the app in the trash? really?

I just re-installed TB, I just set up an email account..
TB WON'T CONNECT TO THE SERVER..

I can connect fine to the email account via webmail, but. not with TB..

what's going on..

one thing I noticed, it's asking for a username for the SMPT server...
old TB did not ask for username for the SMPT server..
I put email address, is this correct?

also not sure whether SMTP server is
smtp.gmail.com or
smtp.googlemail.com
(since TB lists ALL SMTP servers together.. it doesn't not tell you which one is for what account, unlike for POP3 server...)

it just says it won't connect to the server because either a password or uid is wrong..
it would be good if it told you WHY exactly it's not connecting to the server..

(are ports the same as I had in old TB?
995 for POP3
465 for SMTP..)

ok, this finally worked!! changed settings so much back and forth, don't know what made it work in the end..
