Yesterday a friend was here helping with some glitches that needed correcting. Now when I turn on Thunderbird each account opens with a big screen that says 'welcome to thunderbird'....once I open an email in that account it goes away.....the same for each of three accounts. Then when I turn off the laptop and come back, the t-bird screen is back in all three again. I know there is a simple way to get rid of them...but cannot figure it out. The friend here yesterday suggested something that I cannot find. He said go to Thunderbird menu at top left of screen, but it is not there....then 'preferences', to 'uncheck' next to 'when t-bird launches' and 't-bird start page'...............I cannot find the first t-bird link to follow the rest of the instructions. He said left of the FILE link at the top....there is nothing left of that....I am going in circles!!!!!

Also, set each account in Thunderbird to "Check for new messages at startup". The menu path is Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings.

When I follow what you suggested the screen I get under general tab says:
+ show only display name for people
+wait _ seconds before marking message
+remember the last selected message
+show expanded columns
+open new message window......or existing message window
+determine how t-bird handles receipts
+advanced configuration
