Hotmail SMTP Server

Post by Annailis »

Recently Live Hotmail opened up popmail and smtp service to its free account users. Finding the hotmail add-on a little sluggish for downloading I decided to use the new settings to download hotmail in Thunderbird. Well I can get the pop server working wonderfully but can't get the smtp server to allow me to send mail (keep getting a "smtp server is not responding or refusing connections") no matter what I seem to try.

These are the settings Livehotmail posted:
When you set up Hotmail in the e-mail program on your PC or mobile device, you may be asked for the following information:
POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Can anyone assist? Ann

pop3.live.com port 995 ssl (yes)
smtp.live.com port 587

You need your entire email address as user name for this to work
"example@hotmail.com"

You cannot just use just "example"

Also you MUST use TLS for the Outgoing server... ... SSL is NOT accepted...

These are the settings that work for me....

See if this works...

Incoming...
Type .. POP
Server Name pop3.live.com
Security SSL
Port 995
User Name Your FULL Email Address

Outgoing (SMTP)
Server Name smtp.live.com
Security TLS
Port 25 Some users have reported Prot 25 as blocked, Use Port 587 instead.
User Name Your FULL Email Address

Make sure you have connected the SMTP server to the correct account....

If this does not work, then you will need the Webmail Extensions...

Strangely enough, Microsoft don't seem to be publicising this....

I've been having the same problem - couldn't send from Thunderbird on port 25 or 587.

Turned out to be my software firewall blocking the connection (Zone Alarm in my case)

Now happily sending and receiving :-)

Now that I'm at home, using port 587 with TLS checked seems to work just fine. Will have to find an excuse to travel to test it on the road!<g>

@ Annalis & jrl No worries... :) Happy to help.

@ davio & Guest three posts above this one ..

Make sure that these ports are not being blocked by Security Software, or something in Vista.....
As suggested above, Zone Alarm is being naughty.... Others may be also doing this. Make sure your Security software is updated, as they might have patched their Security Software for this.

Um, Did you violate the terms of service ? Did they tell you why you were blocked ?

Are you using the Webmail Extensions or the POP/SMTP servers ?

Can you send messages via the Hotmail Website ?

Email Providers will only block you if you have abused their service....
Other Problems (that may cause apparent blocking) are usually due to not having the settings correct....

Hotmail have been altering their service recently, and Firefox and Thunderbird users have been having difficulties related to this.

Not in this topic. This one is about Hotmail, not Yahoo. Start your own new topic please.
