Nope.. just deleting the .msf file doesn't restore deleted emails.

If the x-mozilla-status is set to deleted then the msf rebuild will still not show the message since the msf is build from those status flags. As far as I know it has always been that way going back to the first versions of Netscape to support email.

I stand corrected. I'm sorry my information was wrong. I through it worked that way. My apologies.

No problemo! That's why I got confused by your suggestion, as it didn't seem likely to work that way.

Long time coming... but I tried the following:
1. Create a new mail folder to test with.
2. Move some emails into it that I didn't need.
3. Select all the emails in the test folder and hit SHIFT-Delete ("permanent" delete)
4. Close TB, delete the MSF file of the test folder.
5. Open TB again.
End result: Nope. That method does *not* work to recover deleted emails. The emails were still deleted.
As far as I have seen, the only method which works is the one I originally described.

alternatively as FYI ...
if antic is imap, and if antic had not restarted thunderbird, and if antic had not compacted, and the server supports it (which would be normal) THEN ctrl+Z will indeed undelete even shift+deleted messages. but that's a lot of ifs
