Reducing the maximum mailbox limit in Thunderbird

Post by PVJ »

Dear All,

By default Thunderbird has a maximum inbox/mailbox limit of 2GB. I would like to know is there any way to reduce this limit.

Thanks,

The maximum folder size is 4GB, not 2GB, unless you're using a file system that limits the maximum file size. Even then there are some bugs that sometimes let you exceed the 4GB limit. There are bug reports about some old versions (mainly for OSX and some BSD systems) that accidentally lowered the maximum folder size to 2GB but since you're using Windows (and presumably using a relatively recent version) that shouldn't effect you.

I recommend you keep your inbox as small as possible (move any messages you want to keep to other folders/child folders) as its the folder most prone to corruption due to so many messages typically being deleted (either explicitly or due to moving them to another folder) in it and most users underestimating how often they need to compact. The other folders are usually not at risk since you don't usually delete many messages in them.
